Nice coin, are you selling it? I have never been too interested in copper, but that is one good-looking piece.

OK copper guys, is the BN, RB, RD designation consistent across the board (in general)? Correct me if I'm way off, but is it <10%, 10-90% and >90% red?
Edited to add: I just hit 1500, I must be getting smarter, right?

This is a Newcomb 3 (N3). All coins struck from this die are proofs making them easy to spot in any grade. PCGS has it priced (PR65RB) for $15,000 except for the huge bag under the eye. Just a reflection?, a camera malfunction?, a blundered proof?. A coin like this could be worth 10 times more. What is on the slab label?
Reminds me of the unholdered one I saw at a show 12 years ago in Tony Terranova's case. Even though I was clueless about Proof large cents at the time, it drew me to his case like a huge magnet. Tony was nice enough to let me hold it briefly in hand. Never will forget that coin. Might even be the same one you've imaged...
<< <i>I calls em as I sees em .... and apparently I calls'd it right.
Yes, but, sometimes it's better to keep your opinion to yourself, especially when no one has asked your opinion. I sold this coin years ago to a collector as PR65BN, even thought it's in a green tag 65RB holder. I bought that collection recently, and resold the coin at CSNS, to a dealer, with my statement that I thought it should be more properly graded PR66BN. But that doesn't mean that I need to rain on someone else's parade when they post a picture. Unnecessary criticism, in my opinion. >>
Oh, whooptie do. If one can't handle a simple comment that a coin one posts [or sold] is obviously BN, then one's panties are way too tight.
<< <i>However, if we want to "call 'em as we see 'em", then your inventory should be fair game. >>
I have no inventory, Joe. But if you are referring to Legend's inventory, then I guess your inventory is fair game as well?

I disagree Joe. If something is displayed on an open forum such as this, opinions are usually desired. If opinions are not wanted that should be stated. Calling the coin awesome is an opinion also that I am sure you would not criticize.
<< <i>I have no inventory, Joe. But if you are referring to Legend's inventory, then I guess your inventory is fair game as well?
You're becoming predictable. I'll play that game if you would like, but I don't think that it will turn out well for you.
As a principal in two numismatic companies - Legend and CAC - I would expect a higher standard of behavior than you have exhibited here recently. Take a breath and think about it. >>
Breath taken. And I stand by my large cent comment. And if you really want to play, we can discuss a couple of specific coins that you've sold the past few years.
This puppy is just flat beautiful regardless of grade and/or designation. I also agree with Joe that the coin should be in a PR66 holder. It really is that nice.
<< <i>And if you really want to play, we can discuss a couple of specific coins that you've sold the past few years.
TDN - I have no problem with an open discussion of coins that I've sold where you believe I have misrepresented them. But, I ask for two conditions. First, start another thread so that we don't hijack this one any longer and second, lets keep it civil. I look forward to your comments. >>
I have no interest in furthering the hard feelings around here. I'm sorry that you feel it inappropriate to make an ACCURATE comment regarding a TPG holdered coin posted on the forum. It's certainly within decorum for this site. However, if your taking me to task is overflow for the way I reacted to MS68 threatening my partner indirectly, then so be it. If not, then you're just incorrect as to what's acceptable around here. Maybe if you started some threads and interacted with the forum members in a positive manner more, you'd be more attuned to what's considered proper and what's not.

Russ's statements are both true, a hard to photo coin that looks better in person. Russ wasn't asking "what do you think". Maybe we've all been watching too much American Idol. Sometimes we should just keep quiet and listen to the music. >>
Hi Joe, I do not think that Russ expected people to not respond to this thread and just listen to the music. In fact, if this thread just went by with no responses at all---good or bad---Russ would probably think that the pics did not show up in the thread.
That is a beautiful coin!!! I agree that as per the photo there may not be enough Red to warrent the RB designation, but perhaps in hand, there is more red?? Either way, I think is is a coin that anyone who appreciates beauty would love to own.
Nice coin, BUT...I can hardly see the darn thing through all of that glare. This is a great example of why I do not like slabs on some coins.
Now, I wonder if creative use of polarizing filters could eliminate that glare? Unfortunately, I do not have a polarizer for my light source, only for my lens, so I cannot test my theory on taking glareless shots of coins such as this.
Honestly. Nobody sees that? Or is this silent acceptance? Jeez!

<< <i>Why is it that 1857 large cents are scarce with original mint (red) color, whereas 1856 and other late dates of the 1850's are relatively plentiful? >>
Rays, I assume that you are talking about business strikes and not proof large cents, right? The proofs are all scarce and even the more plentiful of the proofs (the 1856) is downright scarce regardless of color designation. But, to answer your question, the reason why the 1857 business strikes with original mint red coloration are scarcer than the other dates of the 1850s is simply due to the lower mintage and the fact that some of the 1857s were melted (it was a transitional year -- F.E. cent). Another factor that can explain your observation is that a few hoards from the past century contained many fully red cents from the 1850s. As time has passed, I am sure that many of those red cents have mellowed are are probably RB.
I believe to catch the color on that coin, you need to be in the path of reflected light. The surface of that slab, being parallel to the surface of that coin, is going to make this almost impossible.
Something intrusive, like applying an anti-glare coating to that slab...or cracking that sucker out ... might be required for the ideal photo.
