One Last Thread For Those That Have Been Bashing Me

A lot of you guys have bashed the he11 out of me because I "don't understand grading" I'm going to prove to you that I understand more about card grading than any of you. Go to this web page below. Pay special attention to the Bonds rookie. According to Beckett, a perfect 10 Bonds rookie sold for $2,625. My point about the subjectivity is proven. Even with my alleged blind eyes I can spot the edge wear on this card. It stands right out against that black border. Case closed.

Is it really worth $2,625?

    Plifter,

Here's some very easy advice to follow. Buy the card, NOT the grade. It doesn't get any easier. I'm a PSA graded card noob and even I get that. People are going to spend what THEY want on cards. It has nothing to do with what YOU think is a fair or reasonable price. No matter how many times or how many different ways you try to sell the idea.

For someone that's apparently so bitter towards PSA (for not wanting to get involved with your Ruth Goudey) you sure do spend a lot of time posting on their boards. image

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING BUT ALL OF THE KNUCKLEHEADS ON THIS BOARD JUMP ALL OVER ME FOR POINTING OUT THE LUNACY OF PAYING $2000 FOR A CARD FROM 1983! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! I'M THE ONE THAT'S BEEN SAYING TO BUY THE CARD AND NOT THE GRADE! I REPEAT, I'M THE ONE THAT'S BEEN SAYING THAT! WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! READ MY THREAD ABOUT THE INSANITY OF GRADED CARDS!

Please cease, and take some of the advice that was given in the other thread. It will only help you, if you allow your pride to give in and accept it.

All grading companies make mistakes. We have all said that. Heck, GAI graded and holdered, a more than likely altered Goudey Ruth that you currently own. Another interesting point is that you see that chipping on the Bonds, but fail to see the obvious chipping, centering, and corner problems on your 83' Topps Gwynn that you claim is "perfect", but BGS holdered it a generously graded BGS 8.5. This is just even further proof as to what some of us already suspect about you.

I hate to be so frank, but my gosh, you are just too dang hard headed to want to learn anything, in order to better your knowledge of the grading process.

GRADING IS MERELY AN OPINION FROM SOMEONE WHO MAY NOT EVEN COLLECT CARDS. DON'T PAY $2600 FOR A $20 CARD JUST BECAUSE IT'S IN A HOLDER THAT SAYS "GEM MINT".

YOU'RE THE ONE THAT'S HARD HEADED BECAUSE YOU THINK THAT PSA'S OPINION IS WORTH PAYING $2000 FOR A $20 CARD! IT'S SAD TO SEE COLLECTORS DUPED INTO PAYING ABSURD PRICES FOR COMMON CARDS JUST BECAUSE SOME UNKNOWN "EXPERT" LOOKED AT IT FOR 30 SECONDS!

Hey, I've been taking crap all night from people who are talking about how ignorant I am about cards and grading. I'm smart enough to realize that all you get is a quick opinion when you submit your cards for grading. I'm also smart enough to realize that the 30 second opinion isn't worth paying 100X the cards true value.
  • Hey, you are the drunk clown, I am sitting here in a sober state of mind. I do not use alcohol in my life, thanks.

I never said I would pay $2000 for a Tony Gwynn card, I said I would pay $2000+ for a modern card if it was of a player I collect. As a matter of fact, I have done it on several occasions, just to be perfectly clear. It's my money, I wanted to, and did it. No skin off your rump, so why worry about it?

Take your drunk ace to bed, and come back when you can at least make some sense. Even when sober, most of us have a hard time understanding your conspiracies, and being drunk makes it next to impossible.
  • BoopottsBoopotts Posts: 6,784 ✭✭
Well, I guess the only reasonable conclusion that man in with your finely tuned understanding of the vagaries of the sportscard market can come to is that we're all a bunch of dippy millionaires who salivate at any opportunity to spend four figures on mass produced singles from the '80's. Which means-- amongst other things-- that you're beating your head against the wall here, since there isn't a man amongst us who wouldn't gladly sell a kidney if it meant we could finally plunk down that $1500 on a PSA 10 GEM MINT 1983 Tony Armas. And who wants to beat their head against a wall? Life's too short. And besides, that kind of activity can really hurt. So go hug your kids, or (better yet) slurp down another Old Milwaukee and call it a night. I promise you that by 10 am tomorrow you'll be glad you retired early from this silly debate.
  • Due to this thread I have now quit the hobby.

Fine, then dont pay it. But makes you so much more of an expert than anyone else? Do you tell tell everyone they are knuckleheads or clowns because they dont agree with you? There are a lot of people making a lot of money on these high grade cards. I think you have way too much jealousy for those who have things you dont. Dont worry about the Jones' and worry about yourself.

And to think, your idea to spend 10% of your anual income, to pay $3300 for a GAI graded Goudey Ruth has continued to work you into this frenzy. All because PSA rejected it twice, and now they must be some vast conspiracy by the grading companies since they would not holder your card. If it was me, and a card got me this bent out of shape, I would just sell, take the loss, and move onto something that would be better for my mental health.

Several members have gave you advice on different routes to persue, but obviously, you are too busy on here complaining, instead of talking to GAI or trying to continue to get in touch with Joe Orlando, to see if you can get the truth as to what the exact issue is with your Goudey Ruth, that PSA did not want to holder it 2 different times.

I guess some folks just go through life half lit, and wonder why they get toasted in the end. It makes no sense, because if it was me, I would have been on that phone this past Monday, and by this week's end, I would have at least made some headway on my card and what the issues were. Instead you have wasted the week away, and still in the same boat you started in, after the first time it was submitted. It's just sad to see people do this stuff to themselves. You are hurting yourself, not us, and funny to think some of us wanted to help you in the begining. Now, I am starting to care less and less, due to the way you have handled all of this.

A couple hints that might make all of this easier to process--

A cards 'true value' is determined by what it sells for. You-- or I, as far as that goes- might think chasing PSA 10's is a little ridiculous, but then I also think it's silly to pay four figures for a card just because the man who is pictured on it signed his name on it. Note, however, that I'm not here railing on people for collecting autographed cards, or (while I'm on the subject) cards that have a swatch of another man's shirt embedded in the card.

That brings up another interesting question: What does a man do with a game used 'Babe Ruth Pants Card' he just dropped $1500 on once it gets in the mail? Does he sit in a dark room and reverently stroke the fabric? I can hear it now: "Honey, I can feel the Babe-- I can FEEL THE BABE!!! He's right here with me!!"

Anyway, there are two larger points here that need to be made. First, the whole notion of spending enough money on a baseball card to feed a moderately sized Ugandan village for three years-- any baseball card, I don't care how old it is-- is by itself utterly irrational. And the fact that this hobby is based-- nay, sustained-- by this kind of irrationality gives rise to other peculiarities which are, for the most part, better left unexamined. Why is a rookie card worth more than a second year card? Why is a card that's produced by Topps worth more than a 'fantasy' card produced by an unlicensed manufacturer? Why do card picturing Willie Mays-- a man who is, by all accounts, one of the most insufferable men on the planet-- sell for more than those picturing Ron Santo, a man who is the absolute picture of integrity and perseverance? We could ask these questions all day and night, but guess what? We don't. And do you know why we don't? Because the rest of us 'get it'. And you, for whatever reason, apparently do not.

Question: Why does someone pay $2625 for a card?
    Answer: Because they can.

  • << <i>A lot of you guys have bashed the he11 out of me because I "don't understand grading" I'm going to prove to you that I understand more about card grading than any of you. And for even further follow up, you are showing us a 1986 Topps Traded PSA 10 Bonds. That card has never sold for $2,625. They never reached those levels, but the PSA 10 Topps Traded Tiffany did..

There was a 1986 Topps Traded Bonds BGS 10 Pristine that did sell for more than $2000 in the past, but that is a BGS 10 Pristine, not a PSA 10. Two different animals.. This shows yet again, that you are talking out of pure foolishness, and you do not even understand what you are throwing out at us. I guess your hope is that if you keep throwing conspiracies out there, one of them might stick. So far,you have yet to make that theory work.

    How to go cow tipping

    Ayleen Lindahl

    Introduction

Cow tipping is an art in itself. It began many years ago, when a young boy of the name of Tipper decided to make a cow more comfortable as it slept. Thinking that standing while sleeping was cruel and unusual, he set out one night to give 'ol Betsy a rest. Tragically, Tipper fell into a thick cow pie as he tried making his way back to his warm bed. He ended up going to the hospital with a severe paranoia of cows. The next day, his family had a big steak dinner.

For generations after, Texans have engaged in this heightening activity. Young children dream of it during their algebra classes, the rites to passage so close and in their reach. As the 16th birthday approaches, all your peers will gather and perform this ritual with breathless anticipation.

    Supplies

    2 12-packs of Beer
    Black clothing
Boots (Around cow pastures, wear boots that can be hosed down)
    Wire cutters and a flashlight
    Your friends Dave and Jerry

    Setup

Drive Dave and Jerry to the pasture, hand them the beer.
Wait ten minutes for them to finish up both packs.
    Help Dave from truck.
    Help Dave review his lunch.
Place wire cutters in back pocket, and make sure all black clothing is being worn.
    Quietly approach fence to pasture.
Ask Dave for the flashlight. Run back to truck and retrieve flashlight.
    Cut fencing and wiggle through.
Stay hunkered down and try not to giggle as you approach the nearest cow.
Beam flashlight quickly into the cow's eyes. If no reaction, you are good to go. Skip ahead to Tipping the cow.
If cow bucks, sending Jerry screaming like a woman back to the truck, go on to next step.
Run after Jerry, tumble him to ground and hold hand over his mouth.
Wait 20 minutes for Farmer to look out the front door and Holler at wolves.
Find another cow, repeating the last 5 steps until you find one sleeping.

    Tipping the cow

Have Dave hold the bottom of cow on one side. (Bottom of the cow is right under the ribs, and on the soft part of the belly.)
Have Jerry beside you, with both palms against cows upper back on opposite side. (See Figure 1)
    Count to three, and PUSH!
Back up quickly from the cow, as its legs will fly up toward your face.
Slap high fives to Jerry and shout your success.
Find out what whimpering sound is.
With Jerry's help, pull Dave out from under the cow.
Run from farmer. (Duck when you hear shots in the air.)
Jump into the truck and speed away into the night.

    Congratulations

You have successfully completed your training in Cow Tipping. You are closer to being a true Texan! The next step to your initiation is How to eat cow fries.

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I suggest nobody try it. If the cow falls on you, you will likely become deceased.

Ranchers do "tip cows" in mechanical slings, when hoof maintenance is required.

Just as a pure goof , I went to the gym today and threw 500 lbs on the bar , it's bad enough I damn near got laughed right out of the place with everyone lookin at me , But I couldn't even get it off the rack ! image

I must be one weak bastidge @ 175 lbs

All discouraged I asked around if any of the huge guys could lift it , I didn't have any takers for a while , I guess they also did not want to be embarrased by trying until this one huge guy about 270 lbs finally did it , cost me 50 bucks and my pride to find that out .

I should have video taped it though because this guy did not just snatch it off the bar and squat it like you did , it was even heavy for him . . . I asked would I be able to lift this weight at my weight , he told me my legs would have to be as big if not bigger than my waist .

Don't ever make me do anything like this again please ! image

Here I am at 22 years old. I weigh 161 lbs. in this picture. That's not quite 500 lbs. on the bar. It's a mere 465 but trust me, I followed this lift with 505. I took 1st place in my weight class and won best lifter (an award for the best pound for pound lifter in the contest) I guess your gym is full of pansies.

So if I subscribe to your beliefs, then whoever that guy in the photo is a moron. He should be happy lifting only 200 pounds, why does he have to try to lift more than anyone else? Is it just so the other men standing around can see how wide open he can make his mouth and possibly ask him out for coffee? No, it's about status and ego (mostly ego), and that's why someone wants a 10 instead of an 8.5

plifter, Why do you come to these message boards if you are going to call people names for their opinions? It has been said many times that you need to have thick skin on these boards. Your behavior, if nothing else, is very immature. Just have PSA slab your card authentic and be happy with it.

    Exactly.

Did you do that squat the RIGHT way? Like go down so your knees were even with your butt? and if Im not mistaken 4-45 lb plates on each side plus the bar (45 lbs) = 405.

I was thinking the same thing!
  • I can't criticize power lifter for his lifting prowess, since there is no reason for him to be anything but truthful on the subject.

However, he is driving me nuts with his threads on the grading game (and it is a game). Either stop buying graded cards and submitting or live with the fact that there will be inconsistencies along the line. This is all about the opinion of a grader who has past experiences to help him form his current and future opinions on cards.
