This is a coin in the Bowers auction, and was purchased in auction a couple of years back. The pics are not great, and i have seen this coin in hand.My answer will come later.

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

If it is PCGS or NGC holdered, I'm then even more confident in my answer.
Don't know but I'm always very suspicious of any coin with fancy colors that add considerable to the value of the coin. The coin doctors are really that good.

AT or NT... this is a product of storage.... If properly stored, it would not have toned in this manner. Now, that being said, I have no idea of 'intent'... however, no WLH would tone like this under proper conditions. Cheers, RickO
I've never seen those colors on an AT coin, but I've never seen such consistent toning on both sides of an NT coin, so I'm on the fence (leaning toward AT).

Looks AT, notice the blackness on the rims edge, this would suggest an artificial surface may have been the culprit in my opinion. the natural process of NT is a progression if intense color originated around the rim to the center, a bulls eye effect, like most other NT coins you see, this one does not seem to follow the natural progression.
Like the Franklin the walker used the same solution in the acid bath, unlike the Morgan dollar a different process was used to clean the blank before minting, leaving less of a reactive residue.
You don't see many Franklin's like this one either?
Didn't Laura have this one in her inventory a few years back? If so, I examined the coin in person at the Baltimore show and weighed in on it within the thread about the coin.

Absolutely correct Tom.
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
Very attractive coin, but a little too funky for me. Very well might have happened naturally due to its storage, but that still has too much wiggle room. I agree with others that this one has to be looked at in hand and with an open mind.
I think bright neon colors best suit salt water fish, not coins. I am not a fan of anything resembling urine-colored toning on coins, either. I think the person that "did the deed" was a bit dehydrated at the time, hence the bright yellow color. I don't like this image at all; I hope the coin is more attractive in hand.

It still doesn't look the way a typical franklin, or walker tones. You know with that spotted look. could have been cleaned then re toned. The silver just doesn't take to toning from the mint the same way as a Morgan.
The washed out colors from the first picture might indicate AT, just a guess.
Any one have any toners that come close to this? How much was the asking price?
The 43 D looks NT and sold for a great price. NGC MS67 $2850.00 , but It also looks like it was scuffed up a bit, and the toning came off. For the 43D, wouldn't the patina be deeper into the coin if it was NT, and not scuff off easily?

The nicest MS NT toned Walker i have ever seen i sold to Larry Sheppard,to Anaconda,to a collector was originally in a PCGS 66 holder and last resided in an NGC 67* holder. That i still regret for ever selling.Anaconda may still have an image,i cant find mine.A pic is somewhere in the rainbow room on the TCCS Forums about 2-3 years ago.I will give my thoughts on this coin tomorrow.

It would be interesting to crack it out and resubmit it to see what the results would be the second time around.

Yup. Definitely a coffin coin since no one would chance cracking it out.

Perry, now they are bagging original coins too,and undergrading as well,so my dealer friends tell me.We have gone from one extreme to the other from the TPGs in the last couple of years.I just want CONSISTANCY.
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
Auction is over.Dont know if this coin sold and for what.My opinion is that the coin is NOT Natural color.I believe that the coin was doctored.Just my two cents.

PerryHall says---------It would be interesting to crack it out and resubmit it to see what the results would be the second time around.
this is perhaps the best reply in the thread. the price of this coin, whatever it may be(but i'm assuming it's substantial), is 100% related to the color. looking at it from that perspective nothing would really change if it moved up/down a point, but quite a bit would change if it failed to holder due to Questionable Color. i know if it was my coin there'd be no way i'd crack it out since it resembles nothing i've seen in color pattern, intensity or overall hue. i may be the wrong person to ask but it screamed AT when i first opened the thread.
to all who are convinced it's NT, would you crack it out if you owned it??
Keets,I have now said i believe the coin not to be natural, thats why i didnt buy it over a year ago.I will say that it would get BB if resubmitted, however,NOW is not a good time to judge the opinion of the TPGs on NT/AT coins, only because they are both undergrading and bagging coins like never before, not just for questional color, but altered surfaces, and reasons i have never heard of,so my coin dealer friends say.I do agree however with both Perry and you as to the result.

Russ, you are right, the coin is much brighter in hand.

is that what limited its grade to 64?

but it seems to have had a little help. I can't say that I have ever seen a WLH tone in this
manner before. Example: How would it obtain such vibrant Reds?
Stating that it is in a PCGS holder IMHO, means only that the graders find it acceptable.
Not too sure on this one.

like it before.
i am going to say AT for just that reason.
it really does not matter if i am right or wrong though... just reminds
me of AT ASEs... somehow stored to cause that wild toning...
Although the progression looks OK. So if it's less so in hand, then I'd change my mind
