I missed it back then, and might have answered differently then as well.
As for today, if a true AU55/58 attractive piece is in existance, I would buy a 1804 Bust Quarter in Choice AU ... and it would be the centerpiece of my ChAU Quarter set.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”
Unlike Rhedden, I would forgo the 1802 half dime and, like Tmot99, would opt for the 1792 half disme. As to the reasons why, this would be a once in a lifetime purchase, so why not use it for a real piece of Americana, one that we know was once held by both Thomas Jefferson and President Washington. The 1792 half disme has long been on top of my want list, and one day I hope to own one, short of hawking half the collection to do so.
They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
I would buy this coin ...... again Why? Because it is exceedingly rare (4 known) and a beautiful design. I find it interesting that the coin has an eagle and the motto "In God we trust" on both the obverse and reverse.

Not that I could find it when I have an extra $50k, but I suppose a nice AU-58 -MS-62ish 1861-D gold dollar. Loads of history for the money. Most all other coins that are equal to it in rarity are well over $100k.

This looks like what i'd go for. I know the BIN is only 20k, but it's got a "Make an offer". Perhaps the seller would take 50K?
Seriously, this is an impossible question for me to answer. I do not really look at coins of this price as I will never be part of that market. Oh, okay. I would get an 18th century gold eagle. And a half eagle too. D'oh.
A 19th Century PCGS or NGC slabbed Deep Cameo Proof Gold coin.
Why? Because I want (and deserve) one of those coins.
In fact I want an 19th Century Proof Set, from Cent to Double Eagle with all coins being graded Deep Cameo PR65 or better. Why?,,......................................., Why not?
1797 skinny eagle half dollar...the only silver (and silver is the only metal that counts) type coin missing from my US type set. It is also 1 of only 3 years missing from my half dollar 1794--present year set. (I also am missing 1796--the other skinny eagle year and I haven't ever gotten around to picking up this year's edition.)
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Very boring choice I know, but most likely the most profitable one.
