hey guys and gals. this is new to me, as in i just heard about it.
i use these little RSA verisign devices at work to log into uber secure websites that
control number portability for the telephone network and other misc stuff.
well it seems ebay/paypal have them now also.
basically it allows you to use your normal username and password, plus the number
the key fob generates every 30 seconds.
in other words, you can give anyone in the world you username and password, but without
the key fob they are locked out!
that is how it works and i heard it was only 5 bucks. i just ordered mine today and will simply
keep it on my key ring. it does not come auto activated so i will read the fine print before doing so.
I imagine you can get multiple if you are a business but it may not be fine tuned for a large business
yet who has multiple people logging in. it can be disabled, yada yada.
i shall play with one and i think it is worth mentioning here.

ah, so ebay has yet to implement the login. that was one detail i was unsure of.
i will learn more about it when it arrives in the mail. i just know exactly what this
is used for and agree with it.
it makes me feel safer to know my paypal account cannot get raided by a person
who snatches my username and password because someone in my house download
a shareware game to play tetris from a russian website... if you know what i mean.

lathmatch, heh. if i had a throw away account i would gladly allow you to try.
this technology has been used for at least several years now if not a decade.
it is the best security i can think of when it comes to logging in and welcome it.
nothing is perfect and the only situation i can think of is a hacker sitting around waiting
for you to log into paypal and catching your keystrokes. they have approx 10-20 seconds
to use that info to login before the verisign number expires. not very practical when they
are used to owning people at their leisure.
as in phishing attempts. you goto a fake website and plunk in your username and password.
later on in the week/day/hour they collect the info and start using it for malicious means.
anyway, i am going to use it after reading more about it and studying the fine print.
Is this the what the world has become? Everything is locked down and bolted shut. Just checking my bank account online these days takes two screens of security measures. It feels like a bad science fiction movie.

ask me, they can buy these suckers in bulk very cheaply now days. it saves them money in the end
with less fraud cases. they are trying to do good.
if you do not want it one can always find a reason to poop on the idea.
all i know is, the most important websites/databases we touch here at an ISP/telephone
company all use these devices. end of story.

Do you mean your username and password is UCrazyLipYourButtocks?
I've had one for months and use it for Ebay/Paypal. Put the number in after your password then you don't have to go to the second page. It's nice to know you have a little time to change your password if you click on something in error.
I use these for logging into work from home, and the first one I had lasted over 5 years before it was replaced, and the battery was still good.
I now have one for PayPal and EBay and feel safer when logging in through a hotel wireless network when traveling, unless I forget to bring it. Then I'm screwed.

key chain is prob the best place to store it. when do you ever leave
the home and not take your house/car keys? you also keep an eye
on such items all the time by our trained natural instinct.

P.S. Safety tip: using an email address that is similar to your user ID also makes it easier for scammers to contact you. If your user ID makes it easy to guess your email address, it's worth changing your user ID in My eBay -> My Account -> Personal Information.
it took me about 10 minutes to set it up, activate it, on ebay
and paypal.
i now enter my username and my password, and the webpage
asks for the number after that.
or you can enter your username and your password+number..
without the + sign.
nice to know people can steal my username and password but
without the rsa dongle they are locked out.
update for those who care. i am carrying it on my key chain.
i also noted there is a way to get into your account even if you
do not have your security key or lost it. you attempt to login
and ebay will call you on your registered phone number to verify
who you are and then you can get in.
i login at least once if not twice a week since i got mine which was
since march 17th.
edited to add: i just tried it and encountered the error you are
talking about. i am sure it will clear up in a few hours. thankfully
i have nothing to bid on nor have to work with paypal.
but just as i read they have an option that you use in case you
want to get in without the security key. they will call you immediately
or after 1 minute.
i will not bother with that though.

The downside to this.. automated sniping services won't work if I apply this to an ebay account. Upsides are good though.
