I'm hoping for an AU on this 1812 bust half??

Also, any confirmation on an O-105 or 105A........ Any opinions graciously accepted!!

Thanks,

Rick

It would be close and really depend on the surface.

It could be the lighting but I don't really see any luster which is required for an AU grade.

I would think this is more of a high XF grade.

I like the look. It would fit in a hole in my Dansco just snug.

    Hello-

The variety is O-105 (the fused dentils above the last 'A' in AMERICA on the reverse is the diagnostic). I can't tell if the die breaks are there for O-105a. If the photo is accurate, then I think you have a coin that has been cleaned (or more likely over-dipped) a while back and has retoned. There appears to be some luster in protected areas and the detail is there for an AU, but the surfaces look wrong. Also, there are too many deep hits on the obverse in the prime focal area to allow for an AU grade with the other issues with the surface. Of course, if the image is off, then I am not sure about the surfaces, other than the hits.

Body Bag for rim damage and ef45 if the first doesn't catch you.

The mark over the head is a little distracting. In hand might be different,
    AU ? Don't think so.
Just noticed the marks in front of her nose also.

I'm betting that's just the edge lettering.

In hand, I can tell there is quite a bit of luster in the fields hiding under the toning. I agree the surfaces look wrong, I can't tell for sure what it is but the toning looks "off" if you know what I mean.

<< <i>there are too many deep hits on the obverse in the prime focal area to allow for an AU grade with the other issues with the surface. >>

There do seem to be some significant hits on the upper cheek and in front of the neck.............

There appears to be rim damage on the reverse above the "ES" in STATES and the "O" in OF, but actually it's an over-punched "CENTS" on the rim, bleeding into the dentils.

The more I'm looking at this coin, the more I'm thinking that a very quick dip (maybe 3-5 seconds) in E-Z-EST might improve the look of this coin. What say you?? I'm all ready to do it, and I'll post the results.........

Should I?? And, what have I got to lose except for some strange surface toning.........?? I'm thinking this one will look great all nice and shiney!!

Do not dip! It's already been dipped enough! You should never dip anything less than an MS coin anyway.

Nice coin, don't dip it. Looks like a solid XF45 to me.

Your going to see some wicked west to east hairlines on this coin if you dip it.

Leave it be, it is already a dipped out net XF coin, don't make it an eyesore.

I would imagine what some are calling rim damage is from the edge lettering. Perhaps folks are too used to seeing these old coins in slabs.
If the "color" is accurate this piece looks to have had some serious boinking going on in it's poor life.image

I think no rim damage, only letters spilling over the rim. The marks on the obverse could be considered pokes, which might bag the coin as damaged. The details look AU. The overall look is suspicious, and I think PCGS would bag it for this reason. I think there is little chance this coin will see an AU grade from PCGS.

If it was a Bust $, I think they'd slab it. A CBH like this one, though, I think they will bag. Sorry.
