Nice coin! Great dates in great grades to add to your set.

    Nice wiskers on that 20S.

  • Cowabunga, those are exceptional for the dates.

If it weren't for the subtle rub, these would grade 64 and 65 respectively. Truely remarkable pieces. The 20-S might market grade 62.

  • VN but I have a question, On the 20-s I notice something happening on the front of the neck(not smooth). I catch it often on 1916 way more noticeable and buy them up. Is it a clash?

I would definitely concur with that statement.

As important as the actual strike, both are relatively early die states, especially the '26-D, hence the clarity of the Mint Mark. Early die states will often lead to a decent strike as problems with the "strike" on the Branch Mint issues from 1919 thru 1935 are more often the result of worn out dies than an actual deficiency with the strike itself. Actual weak strikes usually show poor detailing at the centers of the coin and sometimes at the front of the Bison's head with decent details elsewhere whereas those struck from worn dies will show poor detail on the entire coin.

Thanks for all the kind words. I knew they were must haves as soon as I saw them. I called the seller this AM just to make sure someone hadn’t beaten me to the bunch, and they hadn’t.

Both are graded PCGS 58. Luckily I have unspent Baltimore cash for this large-for-me purchase, although I probably would have made the stretch regardless. You don’t see these coins, in these grades, with this look, very often at all. I was going to say that you especially don’t see pairs that you need come up at once, but now that I think back on it, that is exactly how it seems to pan out: picked up my 17-D and 17-S at the same time, both my 18-S and 19-S simultaneously on a different occasion.

  • Nice buffaloes from two very difficult date/mm combinations. I would certainly be proud of a full set of AU buffs that looked like these!
