Looks to me like it is just a mark on the bottom right of the MM.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

This is another view....doesn't look like a mark, seems like there's something in the way it was struck, there's a "step down" effect

(high to low) from the right side of the "d" but doesn't look like it was done post mint (in circulation)....more opinions please....thanks image

  • I think I've found an error...but I need verification....anyone here have the expertise to tell me? Are there any records of this type of

mint error? I didn't see anything in the red book, but I know that's not the be all end all to what exists out there... thanks image

  • Looks like a hit to me. I cant be 100% positive with those pics. If you can get closer pics and at a different angel, it may help.

A larger magnification would help... from this photo, I would say post-mint damage... however, I cannot be certain. Cheers, RickO

Use the Zoom feature on your browser (provided you have one).

Interesting, for sure. On many of the older coins the mint marks were literally "hammered" by hand.

RPMs are collected but not uncommon. I have several that clearly show triple struck mint marks.

What I find interesting is the D on the word, Dollar. Zoom in on THAT!

Put it safely aside for now and enjoy the hobby by researching this with available info.

  • I like it, but very common. For the time.

  • Cherrypicker's Guide page 193 and 194 shows two different 1961-D washington quarters with repunched mint marks but appear different than your scan.image
  • Thanks all for the tips....I use a scanner for my pics and those are the highest resolution pics it'll take....guess I'm going to have to get

one of those new fangled electron microscopes that I've heard so much about on these threads lately....

I'll bring this back to your attention once I've succeeded in getting ultra closeups....image
