I completely agree with the above post. Why can't a dealer knowing that the coin that the collector brought in (after researching it on the computer as the dealer did, so now he is in the know) a coin that is a specialist coin thinly traded give ALL the numbers of the previous sales and then say I can't afford nor wish to buy the subject coin at anywhere near historic numbers because it will sit in this store until my retirement but you can try selling it on ebay for x amount and see what a larger audience brings so you can get the most
Realone because the seller asked the dealer what would he give him for it. The dealer simply complied. If you remember, the seller came in, dealer asked what do you want for it?, seller replied what will you give for it and was quoted a price. It is not the dealers job to then say, well you can sell it elsewhere , that goes w/o saying. you agree?

Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!
It was later determined that the dealer was not that far off. The coin was in an NGC 64 slab, it is basically valued at PCGS 63 money.
Someone then mentioned it was a 5k coin. Not a 12k coin. Also it was mentioned that the 14/3 coin is a specialty coin. The dealer looked up previous sales
saw that one retailed for 2, 400.00 and offered that. I agreed then and still agree now that it was BS for him to ask if that was what the OP paid for it.
What the OP paid for it was irrelevant. IMO the 14/3 coin is a very tuff coin to move at top dollar book.

I must relate my experience.. a client needed money so he wanted to sell several coins ..no dogs no limp into grade, very nice coins .I called several dealers....some dealers were just fishing for a FISH...like the other thread wanted to know what I wanted..perhaps to secure a very low price. To the dealers where I stated an good asking price under bid , they weren't interested . Finally 2 dealers were very nice and courteous offered fair prices higher than others and , of course bought the coins. The one point is , that the person looking to sell coins to a dealer, may be in the market later to buy coins from dealers . So a bad selling experience will turn that person from buying from that dealer
A coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It is not worth what someone who owns it thinks it's worth. The marketing and the timing of a coin like this should be prudent, by nature of it's rarity. PERIOD....
The OP of the locked thread has diligently created a stir and can now sell his coin at Heritage for big bucks. No harm , no foul.
TomB said before that anyone looking to sell a coin should have a price in mind of what he/she will take for it. When you ask, "What will you pay me for this?" you are open to what ever the response may be. Maybe the dealer didn't want the coin in the first place. He may have made the offer with this thought in mind.
And as I said before, there is certainly a difference in the market place between a PCGS 14/3 and any other slabbed 14/3. While each coin must stand on "its own merit," registry sets have had an effect on the market place. This one issue being an example. So, yes, I could see an NGC64 14/3 going for PCGS63 money. This isn't farfetched IMHO.
The dealer never mentioned anything but what he was willing to pay and that was based on the Auction back in 2006. Like I said earlier in he OP I know what the coin value is retail and recent auction history. True I did not offer a price or a min. amount to the dealer at the coin shop. I put it out for him to tell me what he was willing to pay. It would be like me having an old classic car that is worth X-amount he goes back in auction time and says i'll pay you what it sold for less the juice. Like I said I would not sell at that amount and I am not a novice. I could have understood if he explained he really did not want the coin, but no mention only $2,400.00.

It would be nice if all 'collectors' who wanted to sell stuff --- would have a clear understanding of what they needed out of the coin. Just like they would appreciate a dealer who puts a price on the merchandise. Makes life a lot simpler.
