Is it bad policy to critique the coins offered on our BST?

As to the OP ... 1444 posts in 4 months ... take shots at other members BST threads ... whine and grovel for attention ...

I'm not even willing to search through this nonsense

I mean really now ... although the one auction was overhyped, we all saw it, most agree ... still bad form

I didn't see the other one, but it sounds like bad form squared ...

Yes, it's bad policy to critique these coins unless you see a major misrepresentaion. I would first PM the seller with your comments and if he gives you attitude then make a comment in the listing.

But first you better know what you are talking about before you publicly slam someone elses coin/s.

As far as ganging up. You bring most of that on yourself by your refusal to acknowledge others opinions. The more you go negative the more people will jump on you. I feel the need to and I'm not part of this group of regulars.

If I put a coin up for sale on the BST, I would ask for critiques. That would not only take care of the question as to whether it is a good or bad policy, opinions would also TTT the ad. image

I'm a bit hesitant to get involved on this thread, but for the most part, I agree with the general consensus so far.

If there's something absolutely ridiculous being sold or hyped, like by a new member with 2 posts who wants to sell a $30k Saint or a raw $10k seated quarter *cough*, then yes, it's probably ok to push their buttons a bit.

On the other hand, for a serious, respectable listing, I think it's as fine to give a polite nudging as it is to give a compliment. IMO, as long as comments are respectful, free speech is important to the operation of any sales venue.

Just my thoughts...I might be totally out of line, though.

When you seemingly don't know what you're talking about, it may be best to refrain from posting said opinions.

You might want to look up some of SaintGuru's posts on 'Grade the Saint', they are rather educational in terms of learning how to grade gold coins.

    Gecko,

    "I have a right to comment ......................"

No sir, you do not have a "right" on this or any other chatroom. It is not your sandbox so please rethink the rights concept. Furthermore, I dare say I have bought considerably more gold than you have....but that's just an assumption.....and a 62 from across the street can vary A LOT.

If you are IN THE DEAL, do it.
If you are not in the deal, stay out of it.

BTW, Heritage has been advertising a lot for a grader position........did you ever think about relocating to Dallas?
    Have a nice day

You probably have bought more gold than me. All I have bought in my 3+ years of collecting is a 12 coin gold type set which I have built piece by piece. All 12 are slabbed by the way. How many certified gold libs do you think I have looked at during this arduous task? And I firmly stand behind my opinion that Paul's lib had far too many contact marks to be a legit 62. If ever there was a case for an MS60, that was it! Im allowed to have an opinion on any coin posted on these boards, and am also allowed to voice it, which I did.

    gecko,

The coin probably wouldn't fit into your typeset but buyers have more than one motivation with regard to buying a coin.

There's an old saying....there is no such thing as bad publicity...just spell my name correctly. You probably had a positive effect on selling the coin.

Furthermore....your reference to calling someone a "... ... next tuesday " is neither clever nor cute. It's rude and quite crude. Are you from the southside of Chicago?

As far as the publicity this thread generated, there is no doubt that I helped to sell that coin. The see you next tuesday reference was in direct response to another ugly acronym thrown my way (reread the post). And yes, im from the southside, excellent deduction? Did you figure that out from my "dont take no chit" attitude?
  • LALASD4LALASD4 Posts: 3,602 ✭✭✭
YES. If you have some different info on the coin, you should contact the seller privately. If it is about price or grade then you are just wasting you time, I am sure people here are knowlegable enough and don't need someone else to hold their hands.

The comments regarding the 62 dime as a POS is funny, I do have a POS for sale on ebay

If you want to flame a coin here is a good start:

Since the CAC isn't giving "not strong for the grade" stickers, perhaps there's an opportunity here? image

I meant something like "Not Solid for the Grade."

People have asked if CAC would do it but since they won't....

I see Gecko says he has been collecting for three years. I'm sure in that amount of time he has learned to grade and comment on all manner of coin photographs. Further, I'm sure he has become qualified as an expert to offer his opinion on every coin posted on the BST board by his many years of experience in handling just about every coin in every grade.

P.S. You guys should back off and give him a little more respect - after all three years is a long time to collect coins.
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?

How long did it take you to spot a dog, or an overhyped coin? Hopefully nowhere near 3 years! I comment on the BST very infrequently. A full 10 posts of my 1400+ have been "over there". Thats 1 post in every 140. A far cry from your assertations that I comment on "every coin posted on the BST board". If you wish to throw a dig at me, because you disagree with my opinion, do so in a more logical and intelligent manner please.image
  • Did somebody call for "Logical and Intelligent"?imageRespectfully, John Curlis PS-Don't forget "Courtesy" without which the other 2 are useless.
  • Im offering 5-1 odds that steve32k is involved in some type of labor union with his painfully obvious "get some time on the job" mentality. Steve, perhaps it took you much longer than 3 years to spot a dog coin for the grade. Just consider that maybe not everyone is as slow on the uptake as yourself.image
