1000 POST GIVEAWAY!!! 2003 PCGS MS69 $5 Gold Eagle ** WINNER ANNOUNCED **

Since I am very much into the Bullion Coins, I thought I'd give away a Bullion Coin. This little baby was about to hit eBay when I realized I had hit 1000 posts. Hard to believe I made it to 1000 without being poofed, isn't it?

So, the giveaway is simple. Just tell me what you like about bullion coins, what designs are your favorite and maybe why and how you began to collect bullion coin? Any information or pictures that you want to share or maybe your views on the future.

Bullion Coin haters are welcome to participate but try to avoid being insulting if you possibly can. image

I do not collect bullion, but I am just starting to get into collecting it a little bit more. The Bald Eagle sets and the First Spouse coins really have my interest. I will probably put together a Liberty set. I really like the SAE series, but I am leary to start that set with all the milk going around. I do have a 20th anniversary set though. No milk.

Thanks for you great giveaway and congrats on 1000!

Thanks for the chance. I collect all different kinds of coins, including the ASE's, which I like because of their design. I started with them because they are reasonably priced, backed by their bullion value, and remind me of what collectors of Morgan Dollars would have collected a 100 years ago. Should I be lucky enough to win your generous giveaway, this would be my first AGE, although I did just receive the proof and uncirc $5.00 Commemorative Bald Eagle today.

Very classy give away Griv! This will make some lucky winner very happy indeed! Please do not include me in your generous give away, as I already have 23 tenth ounce AGE's, and none of them slabbed. Let someone else who may not have one already have a better chance. I think that anything can be collectible Griv, but some of the outrageous prices paid on slabbed modern bullion really baffles me. When I look at my AGE's, I see nothing but a slug of gold that can be aquired just about anywhere. Therefore, I place no "premium" on these intrinsically valuable metal disks.

    Hi, Griv.

What an INCREDIBLY generous giveaway!!! Please count me in.

I just really started collecting, I really like the ASE's (I guess that's kinda obvious, eh?). I'm really looking forward to passing on a collection of proofs and unc's to my kids of something that began during my life-time. My daughter is only two (and another mystery is due in July), so I have some time to build the collection, and not too much from the past to catch up on.

My fantasy, of course, is to obtain (and try to keep!) the 1995-W...but I like all flavors, especially because I can show my kids how bullion goes up and down by showing the pricing for each year's coin. I'm kinda hoping I'll be able to someday say: "Now, 2009, THAT was a great year for silver...I had to pay $79 for this baby!" and so on..
    ASE Addict...but oh so poor!

How can you not like bullion, nothing like having something that is worth something even if all the collectors in the world dried up. And the $5 AGE are a nice way to collect affordable gold pieces, not everyone can afford to collect the 1oz AGE's. And with the giveaway hopefully my 1991 will have a sibling image

    Wow, Ill play.

    Congrats on 1000 posts. image

I like Bullion because it offers two different positives. 1: Its an investment.
2: Some are truely beautiful designs and as such art.
I dont have alot of pictures of stuff yet, but ill take some when the battery is charged.
My first bullion buy from the mint was the 10th ann. plat. set. I had to sell ina hurry and ended up eating a nice chunk. My second buy from the mint, my 1/10th gold, had to be returned. Not for 70's, just for something that wasnt crap.

    Anyway, congrats again on 1000!!!!!!!

Congrats on 1000 posts - I collect bullion, but I don't buy much modern bullion. I have some ASE's, one 1/2 oz proof AGE and lots of classic $5 gold. If I were to win this it would be my forst slabbed gold.

And I do not bag on anyone who collects bullion. Whatever floats your boat, and the designs are great.

I do not typically collect bullion (with the exception of the occasional ASE or foreign silver piece), but only because my income does not allow for it. I do not own any gold at the moment.

I am also not a hater - I think bullion coins are quite attractive. It's just outside of my budget for me to collect.

Also, congrats on the 1k! image

I started to collect in 1993 and a silver Eagle was my third "silver dollar".

I actually like the design of the platinum coins best, just never wanted to spend the money to get one.

i like bullion rounds because it is gold. plain and simple.
otherwise i do not treat them like a rare coin when they are only
5 years old. slabbing is silly.

so to summarize i like gold in all forms!

I have been collecting the four coin gold sets for a number of years. I love the classic design on the obverse. I beleive that the walking liberty design in gold is one of the most attractive designs ever on US coins, bullion or not. The reverse with the eagles is just stunning. In addition to the beauty these coins also have a additional value in the metal that also makes fun to hold and watch the gold prices change. I have to admit my favorite so far is the 20th Anniversity Set.

    Thanks for the chance.

WOW!! Nice giveaway! Please count me in. I will say that be it bullion, classics, moderns, tokens, or whatever, there is joy in collecting. Even to an extent also trading cards, slot cars, or keychains. Gold bullion is sweet, the very best way to invest and stay fully interested on a day-today basis (in my opinion).

best of luck to all collectors, in all areas.image

It i s a very generous give away. I like the bullion coins as a classic that someday in the future will be looked at as classics of a time gone by. I firmly believe that the designs will always be appealing to collectors. They are a joy to hold. My children are always mesmerized when I let them hold them. Well I do enjoy the myself. Thanks

Well, I was hooked on the ase's as soon as I layed eyes on them. Our dog was put to rest this morning, & I added a 1998 ( birth year & a 2008 ) in her Final resting Place, Every time I see one now I will think of her. I guess it put's life into perspective.

I have never owned a bullion coin (or any gold) before the TJ "Liberty" spouse was issued (I had also never before ordered anything from the US Mint)... primarily because of the prohibitive cost (compared to my 'pocket-change' budget)... But the ability to acquire an "old style" design along with precious metal value... made me take the financial plunge! I don't know that I'll ever be able to acquire the entire "short set" of Liberty's... but I really like the first one.

I then took my daughter to her 1st (my 2nd) coin show.... where she fell absolutely in love with this coin:
    image

She was upset that she had 'invested' her summer-job money in a new "top-of-the-line" iPod (her very first... which was later stolen), when she could have invested it in a beautiful gold coin such as this... that would likely increase/hold its value. She is determined to one day own one of these older gold coins (she doesn't have as much fondness for the 'modern crap' now that she knows that there are ancient - to her - pieces of history available out there, for a price!)

And hey - what's not to like about GOLD??? Humankind has been chasing it for as long as written history........... image

And Congrats on getting to 1000 without being *poofed* ~ image

I first started collecting bullion only about 6 months ago when I purchased a 1/2 oz. gold eagle. I first bought it because I thought gold was going to rise (pretty good guess looking back), but also because I just like the look of gold. Now I'm getting into a lot of foreign gold because there are a lot of interesting designs and many sell for around spot. So, I own 2 gold coins including an Austrian Ducat restrike, but I'm saving up to buy more. Too bad I didn't do so before gold skyrocketed.

Congrats on 1000 posts and not being poofed too image

Why collect them? Aside from some really nice designs, they can be a great investment opportunity.
Favorite design and why? I am partial to the ASE. Being a proud American, and a retired 24 year USMC vet, I believe the ASE design is the embodiment of our great nation, free and proud.

Growing up I saw a lot of pirate movies. You know, those shows with big treasure chests, ships full of gold etc... Then I moved on to movies about big vaults and big heists. Now come to present day and I can actually live part of the dream by owning real gold. I have a couple of Buffalo gold coins as well as one 20th Anniversary proof coin. In addition the majority of my collection is pre 1933 gold.

    Just love gold. image

I collect Silver American Eagle bullion coins because it represents a series that began while I was a collector if that makes any sense at all!

In late 1985 I had been collecting Kennedy Rolls and was acutely aware of the mints upcoming bullion coin program! The collecting world was abuzz with discussions and excitment regarding the use of Weinman's Walking Liberty Half dollar design for the coin and very few could wait until the coin was actually released to the public! Walking Liberty's halves were and still are a bvery popular set simply because of that design!

I purchased five coins in Albuquerque New Mexico on release day! I still have three of those coins and have been purchasing at least three a year ever since just to stay on top of the series! I added the proof versions in the early nineties.

I like bullion coins because they are well designed, they are big and bulky (like my IKE's) and because they have real value based on silver content and not based upon what the Federal Reserve system says they represent. The fact that silver has gone up considerably since I purchased those five coins in 1986 and that they are worth close to triple what I paid for them in 1986 attests to their value as a collectible.

Oh yeah, put me in your give away! I never collected gold bullion to due financial limitations but I do accept any gold that is "given" to me!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I accumulate some bullion as a hedge against my "classic coin" collection... image

What I like about it is the simplicity. I can honestly say I've never lost a nights sleep over my bullion. Another factor is that some of the stuff you can get is nice without paying over bullion cost..

    Here's one of my fave's...

    image

For the future I see gold hitting 1000 but having a hard road going much higher until a LOT of profit taking has completed. IMO you'll see Silver closing the ratio gap on Gold for the next year or so. When silver hits 20 it will likely suffer the same as gold with a lot of profit taking going on.

    Congrats on your 1000 !

Best giveaway by a non-pompous person yet!

I got into the bullion coins when my son was born in 2002 and I was looking for momentos of his birthyear for him. Got the standards...the mint set, the proof sets, etc.....then found out about the SAEs (didn't know about them since I had been out of collecting for years).
Got one. Then a roll. Of the 2002s.
Then got a couple rolls of the 2003 then the 2004, etc.

Now, I have more than a couple of rolls, 2 books of 1986-2007, and some misc ones for him. Also have a couple of fractional gold.

Favorite design.....even though I dislike the WLHs, I like the SAE....I think, in this case, for me, size does matter (for the design)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Thanks for the chance Griv, put me in the hat. I collect SAE's mostly because of the price, but love Proof GAE's. Love the design, love the shimmer and mirror depth of proof gold, and love the value. I got me first bullion piece 3 years ago. It was a 2001 NGC MS69 SAE. That's what started it all for me.

Thanks for a chance at the giveaway.

    I love the bullion coins...

The best monetary leverage (as well as a beautiful coin) IMO is the Panda. When released, they normally sell for a small premium over
spot. Over time these have increased in price because of smaller mintages. Some of the earlier dates 1983 and 84 have gone up alot
because of demand. The caveat with these are the number of fakes coming out of China.

This last week I bought two almost complete sets of the Silver Britannia's. I got them from a local dealer at a few $ over spot.
Once again a beautiful coin with a different design every other year. (The Panda's have a different design every year.)

These are two examples of Bullion coins with a double edge upside.

    (1) With rising precious metals prices the coin will naturally rise.
    (2) Because of their unique designs and limited mintages they are a collectable also.

I had never really been that interested with bullion coin until the prices of gold and silver started skyrocketing. It was then that I started to take notice and appreciate the bullion, specifically the older designs. I mean, you can't really get any better than the St. Gaudens $20 gold piece. It's just such a symbol of triumph to me, especially when you consider the way the forced melting of so many forced many to hide their most treasured pieces of gold until the time when they could be proud of their pieces without worry of confiscation. Now that have started to be more interested in bullion, I've even got my girlfriend regularly checking the gold/silver market prices and it's becoming a regular discussion over dinner! Either way, thanks for the chance!

gold is easier to store than silver and has a "cool" factor that silver will never have

gold is a pure and sacred artifact throughout history.

This is a generous giveaway. Thank you for the chance and congrats on reaching a posting milestone. I started collecting in 2005 (late bloomer), and bought the uncirculated 2005 mint set so I could learn to distinguish between AU and MS. I figured that was a good place to start. I also bought a raw 2005 silver eagle. I am slowly collecting the MS set of silver eagles, raw. I prefer the pre-2005 finish to the satin finish as the lustre is missing something to my eye. Since it would be difficult for me to break it up, I guess that means that I am collecting bullion. I like the look of Liberty on the silver, gold and platinum. I have a couple of the $5 gold bullion pieces. The warm color of gold is beautiful. As time goes on I hope to add more bullion. It's both an investment and a collector's delight.

I have a large interest in bullion and other gold items such as commemoratives. Bullion is interesting to me not only due to design but you can actual watch value change. Whether it goes up or down its always interesting to try and figure out why medal prices are doing what they are. Bullion such as AGE are an interest of mine. The lower mintage pieces are the ones I used to look for. I also have great appreciation for Gold Buffalo's. They are very nice big and 24kt gold.

I had to sell lots of my gold while in the house hunting game. The banks don't really look at it like collateral. Thanks for the opportunity at this giveawy and congrats on your 1000 post.
