    Sweet!
I pick up pennies when they aren't obviously covered in filth (like being stuck to the sidewalk with gum ) image.

Sometimes when we get bored at the firehouse, we use some hot glue to glue pocket change to the asphalt out in front of the station. Then we sit out in front and let the laughs roll in!

Better to stoop, bending at the knees rather than the waist, to avoid injury lifting the penny.

Sounds like a few firefighters have been breathing a little too much smoke. image

I was walking one of my favorite four-mile loops last week and found a heavily salted clad quarter on the shoulder of the road. A half-mile later, I found a penny, and then about 300m past that, I found a nickel. With 3/4 of a mile left, I only needed a dime to "hit for the cycle," so I started paying serious attention to the ground.

Just about 150m farther along I spotted a fairly muddy $1 bill in some wet leaves at the edge of the pavement, but that was it. No dime; no cycle; but a memorable day for finding money on the ground. The only time I ever found at least one coin in each of the four commonly circulated denominations on a single walk or run was about ten years ago when I found a little pile of about twenty coins inexplicably sitting on a wide, paved shoulder.

However, on Sunday morning I was walking into the local grocery store, and I glanced (as usual) into the coin return tray of the Coinstar machine. It was brimming with coins, mostly dimes and nickels, and only a few of them Canadian. There were a couple of quarters and two or three cents as well, so I guess it counts as hitting for the cycle--though not in the great outdoors.

Early Saturday and Sunday mornings are good at this machine, because the already-mostly-drunk S.U. students cashing in their loose change to buy more beer late on Friday and Saturday evenings seem not to notice the coins that fall through into the tray.

Ah, the myriad forms of "coin collecting"!

I've always picked them up. Each time I tell myself that I'll stop doing that the day I'm a rich man!

I have always picked up loose change on the ground. Around June of last year (2007) my son and I decided to put all found money into a jar and count it at the end of the year. Six month haul: $43.15.

My nine year old was very surprised, as was I. Now we look all the time. He thinks we will get over $100 this year. I bet he's right...

Yes, I pick up any amount of coinage, free money.

I read somewhere that Bill Gates wouldn't even bend over to pick up $25k.

Maybe I should follow Bill around image

Sometimes.....if my back is feeling good.

**BUT** about twenty five years ago, when my older daughter was about 5 or 6, we went to New Hope PA for a day of tourist walking among the shops etc. Erica was a little quite most of time....rather odd for here. Halfway home, she asks....Is it OK to keep money If you find it on the ground.

Sure, said I, thinking pennies, or maybe a quarter.

Instead, she hands me ten $50 bills, folded tightly four times, with a tiny gold money clip around them.

That was the start of her savings account!

I've been having the same kind of luck lately in parking lots and I'm not sure what it means?

In late Jan 08, on a windy day three $20 bills blew right at my feet, and then in early Feb 08 another $5 bill was heading right towards me image

My kids and I always pick up coins. Everytime we are out it seems someone gets a cent or two. Sometimes even a dime is found.
Some call it an accumulation not a collection

The item about Bill Gates was to demonstrate how quickly he is "earning" money. In the time it takes for a person to pick up a cent from the ground, he's made $25K.

Many years ago I read about a star basketball player. If you took his annual salary and divided it by the number of baskets he'd made. he got right around $20k per basket.

Anyway, Yes, my kids and I pick up all the change we find.

Also, I keep have a recurring dream that it is raining pennies.
    What does this mean???

    Thanks,

If they look relatively clean. Some pennies I get in change look like they have every disease known to man stuck to them. Usually about half the coin is covered in some shade of green. I throw those away.
