<< <i>Let me share a personal story. When growing up I was the last of five siblings at home with my mother who raised all of us on her own due to a medical condition that institutionalized my father. To say the least, every cent counted. My mother was a custodian at a high school. She picked up every dang coin she found. These were found in the halls when she swept, on the cafeteria tables left behind everyday and inside lockers and desk at the end of the school year. (She washed each locker and desk during the summer for the start of the next school year)
Around August the large jar in her locker would find its way home. I was the first to search it and add to my collection. I dare say, many of the cents in those three - four old blue whitman albums I still have hold the fruit of my mothers labor and the beginning to my coin collecting. After searching, I was tasked to roll the coins, and off we would walk to the bank (no car in the family) each of us carrying a brown paper bag with the sum total of around $75-$100 average per year. Once cashed, we headed to the store to buy me school cloths and a new pair of shoes. Next was a bit of shopping for my mother for whatever she wanted to buy with her "bonus". It was then lunch, and grocery shopping and we would walk the mile + back to our home, both feeling wonderful.
So to answer your question, yes, I pick up every coin I see, and now you can understand why.

I pick them up all the time, I went around the office with a plastic cup asking for cents got over $8.00 from just 15 people, they were clearing out drawers and coffiee cups as fast as they could.
I pick everything up except for corroded zinc pennies. I picked up a 1941 Canadian Cent at a 7-11 on Monday. Its in great shape. Picked up a state quarter outside another 7-11 today. Free money !
I pick up pennies every chance I get. Any excuse for exercise. I never really look at the as a numismatic item, I just toss them in the coin jar, roll them up with the pocket change every so often and take them to the bank.
Not anymore I just this morning bent over to pick-up 17 cents in a store parking lot, and a Kia SUV backed out and the bumper bumped my shoulder and tossed me into a bush... not hurt just brused and scratched.

Many years ago, when my youngest daughter was 5....we went to New Hope Pa, which is a tourist trap type town with shops etc.....we parked, and went on our tour of the town. My daughter was unusually quiet the whole day. On the way home, she said "Is it OK to keep money if you find it on the ground?:
sure I said, thinking pennies etc.
she pulls out a little wad of 8 folded up $50 bills.

I have bad shocks and still find it necessary to bend down and collect a penny when I spot it, wasting away in the elements, crying out for a nice warm pocket.
I promise you that Mr. Gates would be delighted to bend over to pick up $25K or $50K. As I stated earlier, I am of the Buffett school.

Found a 31 nice pennies, 2 dimes and a quarter today going to the grocery. That is a total of 76 cents. If I found that everyday it would add up to $277.40 in a years time.

Pretty big money for a five year old, eh?????? >>
I just read this entire thread and thought this was the best find. Although you responded back in February that she found ten $50 dollar bills. What was the correct amount either way what a stroke of luck she had that day. If it was me I truly would have brought it to the police station though.

<< <i>Nope. With my big belly, and two bad knees, I would not stoop for change. Would likely find myself flat on my face. >>
plus, my back is vulnerable also, although I might risk it if it was lying there in an unscratched, clean-looking, PCGS or NGC slab!
