Pine tree shilling! PCGS Results are in.

I was asked if I wanted to buy a collection which includes a pine tree shilling. Will see the collection (very small one) tomorrow. Can't divulge more presently. I don't know about grading, trends or probability of counterfeit pieces. Can anybody help me out with the value of this piece and what I have to look out for? Thanks in advance.

    I would print off Heritage archives for different grades. This would be the best place to go for prices IMO.

    Make the sale contingent on the Pine Tree being authenticated, take the coin on memo, send it to NGC and get it done. Or suggest that the seller does that. Then make an appropriate offer. Pay a fair price so that the seller and you are happy.

    Why NGC? Are they better than anyone else at that particular issue?

    I thought that pine tree shilling was gonna be some hot new secret bidding strategy on eBay. image

    "coinflip" as it were.

    IMHO, NGC = PCGS whatevers least expensive for authentication.

    as far as concensus perceived plastic resale value? PCGS

    I would send it to John Agre at coin rarities online for authentication and evaluation for possible submission to PCGSimage Better yet post a scan and I bet John could tell you if it is authentic then decide on possible submission. Good luck.

    I don't know a lot about these, but yes, take your digital camera with you to take good pictures to post here. I am not sure about weights, but my understanding is there are different sizes also, so maybe also take something to be able to measure the diameter and thickness. I also understand there are a lot of counterfeits and replicas including some made in the 1930s as some sort of commemorative.

    Unless you can comfortably attribute it as being an authentic piece you should hold off on actually buying the collection. There is too much downside on the possibility of a counterfeit.

    Actually, from the prices I've researched in that grade, it isn't so expensive that most of us couldn't own one.

    I was surprised, I really expected more.

    Nice find and the kind of coin you don't consider selling.
