How many coin collectors, are interested in car collections?

The reason I ask is because Barrett Jackson's car auction from Scottsdale is on Speed channel right now. I would love to be able to buy something from there, but I am lucky to collect the widgets I do now with a fairly young family image

nope. i get cars for free. i would rather not pay for them, old or new.
what others think is junk that cannot pass inspection i fix myself
and use for a few years. repeat.

now days work supplies the car. insurance. cell phone. internet. home phone. etc...

i like old cars, but i like them better when someone else stores and pays for their upkeep.
to me they are a utensil to get to point a to b.

but i can understand why someone would want a corvette or 3 from each decade or what not.

pretty darn neat collection/investment but not my cup of tea!

I wonder what my old car is worth.
I bought this 1972 Dodge Monaco Brougham for my wife. She said it was too big for her and wouldn't drive it.
So it sits in the garage.
It has 4061 miles on it.

I love them. Plan to get a few eventually. The cars at pebble beach are what I would really like to get one day though. In the meantime I do paintings of them.

Cars, to me, are transportation/utility.... nothing more. If I never had to drive again, I would be happy. However, I do, so I settle for a basic here to there type vehicle. Cheers, RickO

I know Leroy Van Allen (The "VA" 2/3 of "VAM") was into collecting and restoring cars. Heard he had to sell some (many/all?) of them out in his recent house move though.

Cars are on even par with coins for me. Barret-Jackson is a lot of fun to attend-I have gone with my friend who lives in AZ. I dont think I would ever pay the kind of prices cars fetch there though. I do have a few classsics and some more modern fun cars.

I enjoy watching the auctions on t.v., but I think some of those cars, especially ones from the early '70s, go for waaaayyyy too much money.

I think he sold the whole fleet. I think his wife Marilyn used a '50s Lincoln he restored as a daily driver. He also had a '28 Maxwell, a Model T, other stuff, IIRC, although I don't know how many at once.

The Barrett-Jackson auction is a blast. I have gone for several years (not in the last few, however) with my dad (another car buff) and we spend the week there. Although it has gotten a lot more commercial and much more formal (can't sneak around behind the scenes as much as before), it still is a great opportunity to see a bunch of cool cars and meet some real enthusiasts.

I've been active in classic (1955-1957) Chevy's for many years.

Presently working on a 1957 Bel Air 2-Dr Hardtop. It's a California car (1 pc. front bumper) and has matching numbers throughout. The list of options is lengthy. This all black beauty will be nice when the "body off the frame" resto is finally completed.

Also interesting in buying original motor musclecars from 1966 to 1971.

While I was at FUN, my Brother was at a Corvette Show in Kissimmee Fla just down the road apiece. He's looking for a 65-6-7 Vette which will be his 4th Classic car in the collection. Has zero interest in coins despite having a coin collection as a kid and actually being my first exposure to collecting coins when we were little.

I'm mostly into coins although I could be talked into a Red 65-66-67 Vette, small block, preferably 327/300 ( does it sound like I'm looking too ? image )

I also wonder if in the car collecting world their is a car equivalent to "Modern Crap". Would muscle cars from the 50's 60's and early 70's be considered "Modern Crap" image

Maybe, maybe not. However I could definitely see some of the US Cars made in the mid to late 70's being labelled as "Modern Crap" [i.e. Ford Pinto, AMC Gremlin, etc.]

One of my dad's friends when I was a kid was a big Vette restorer, I remember going to his house and among the 20 or so he had was a 63 split window. I have loved the mid 60's vettes since then, and I so agree with you on the years you like (other than that split window) when I grow up (OK Im 38 so when my kids grow up) I would love to have a 65-67. Definitely my favorite years. I imagine the guy is probably still one of the tops in the country, I could try to check back into it through my dad, just PM me if you would like me to get his info, I will do what I can do get his contact info for your brother.

My personal opinion, your second sentence about pinto, gremlin, etc, is absolutely correct. Muscle cars, no way.... Although prices ballooned for a while (as coin prices do from time to time) classic, antique, etc. require what? A certain amount of time since they were built. Eventually, muscle cars will be as old as a Model T is today. When A Superbird from 1970, that you could have bought from a dealer around 38 years ago, is now 100 years old, and a model T is 150, which do you think the buyers would rather have? A car that is completely a museum piece, or a car you can run 200 MPH on the autobahn..... I just don't buy muscle cars as modern crap, modern crap is what they are producing today, who wants a car that runs on corn? (sorry for anyone on this forum who thinks I should pay more to grill some corn because you would rather run your car on that than let us drill for oil in Alaska).

I was into muscle Mopars from 1991-2004.....moved back into coins as they started to wake up back in 2001.

I settled on Mopars because the production numbers were low and for every 10 Chevelles or Mustangs, there was one Challenger or Cuda for example. The Mopars seemed way underpriced and were a complete performance package.....not just a big engine tossed into a passenger car chassis and frame. Guess I was right as most of those prices tripled and quadrupled over those years. My cars included several GTX's (hard top and convertibles), a 6-pack 70 Challenger RT, 70 Coronet RT ragtop, 69 Superbee, and several 68-69 roadrunners......and you know the rest of the story. image

Mopar or nocar. I'm out for now...but will be back someday. There is only enough time for 1 quality hobby imo. My biggest regrets were passing on a pair of Superbirds, a pair of 2 of 36 made '68 GTX hemi-ragtops (both B-5 blue), and an orange 70 Cuda 6-pack convertible (1 of 36 made).

I might be half tempted to get into a little restoration project is I still had all that chrome and accessories I collected from the scrapyard from the really old autos. Got as much as I could before they went to the crusher. Somewhere among family moves it got misplaced or thrown out.

    I collect coins -

Since I don't think 1 of anything constitutes a collection, I will say that also collect car parts - most of them can be seen in this photo:

    image

Pictured is my 1965 Porsche 912 - until last month it was my only car and I drove it every day for five years - last month I finally gave into practicality and leased a new Volvo C30 - now the Porsche is being stored.

On a tangent, I was just at a dealer's place, a car dealer's that is. The Toyota dealership advertised that they were giving each person ten SILVER dollars who showed up this weekend. The ad on TV showed 10 BU Morgans. Well, $14 or so melt? Why not since it was nearby? I show up and they are, surprisingly, out of them. Instead, I got a $10 bill. Free money and thus a free lunch. The lady in front of me in line was insensed, having driven for over an hour to collect her entitlement. Anyway, I asked what kinds of dates they had and was told, "pretty old ones, from the 1970s. Oh, there were some very old ones from 1776!" OK, so they had some circ Ikes, including bicentennials, distrinuted by someone clueless that DW Eisenhower could not be on a 1776 US coin. At least I won't end up in the pokey for a few hours after trying to spend one at a retail establishment with a very suspicious weekend assistant manager with the FBI on his speed dial.

1965 AF/X Fairlane 500 SC, Have the original invoice both from Ford and Kuntz along with the original 427 side-oiler, 4spd, 9in...acid dipped front and doors.

1966 T5 with 24,007 original miles. A-code, auto fastback with all the original emblems and the original gas cap...need a new steering wheel for it...somebody decided that they wanted it more than I did.
