I have never owned a modern coin in an NGC slab, but I have had several very important early commem upgrades from NGC to PCGS. I too think the slabs are terrible looking and take up to much space. I like the demand going one way things used above. I fully agree.

I had a big long post in response to your crass presentation of the point you were trying to make. However, I then realized it was about moderns and now I understand why you are upset. It's too easy to focus entirely too much on the plastic when collecting moderns. This is another reason I stay away from this area.
For moderns that I do (65-72) I think NGC is just a tough as PCGS. One difference I have seen is on the UCAM/DCAM designation. For a coin to get a DCAM at PCGS is has to have WHITE frost. NGC will assigan a UCAM to proofs with WHITE or SILVER frost. As far as you saying the NGC sucks at moderns, please to tell everyone. I love buying crossover coins cheap!
As far as the holder, for proofs and gold I wish they would go with a black insert, the white insert is a PITA to photograph.
Now put down the koolaid, if you don't like NGC.... DON'T SUBMIT OR BUY THE COIN IN THEIR HOLDERS. Geeze get a friggan' life.

If you think NGC sucks, it's okay. You are paying too much for your coins(in my opinion). This isn't about modern or classic coins. This is about an attitude. A collector seldom complains when the COIN he's going for is in his grips. The guy trying to make a living without paying his dues is always the guy who gets really pissed off at the whole scene. I've seen a lot of people bash Third Party Grading. Why ? Because they know how to grade, or ????? Because they can't cheat people like they used to ?. Who really has the answer to that one ?
You see, our attitude tells the world who we are and what we are about. Change yours and you will find that COINS are a joy to collect, in spite of their age, their worth or the plastic they are in.

So according to griv, if you took a group of PR69DC modern proofs in NGC holders and had them graded by PCGS, a majority would have graded PR68. I am sure he can come up with some type of fact to back this up.

I tend to disagree with you and your strong support of PCGS.
NGC respectable? Yes. In the realm of MS68-69-70, any company that can grade consistently within one grade (or even two), I consider to be respectable.
I don't know how NGC and PCGS work in terms of grading moderns. The perception is that PCGS has stricter standards. Perhaps. We may not know the reason. Perhaps PCGS uses 10x magnification whereas NGC only uses 7x. Who knows? But, except for the annual proof and silver proofs sets every year, I don't collect moderns. I don't try to see if I can get MS70's.
Another thing perhaps is that I believe PCGS is more likely to err on the side of caution, especially with coppers and higher grades. This is probably because of their grade guarantee policy.

I suggest you lighten up on your personal attacks and maybe even add some more fiber to your diet.
I sent in 15 different PCGS PR69DCAM coins for NGC to cross and put in three multi-holders when my daughter was born back in 2005. They crossed 12 to 69UCAM and graded 3 of them as PR68DCAM. In this case, they were tougher on moderns than PCGS.
I find it much more collector friendly to put a larger percentage of modern coins into 70 holders - it holds down the huge premium for the label. And that premium is for the label - if you disagree, then crack out every one of your 70's and resubmit them. Let us know how it goes!

I do get defensive when I get a slew of replies that attack any semblance of credibility I might possibly have. I made my first MS70 on a 2001 $10. The pre-2002 grade MS70 coins are hard to come by. Not too many people thought to collect them back then so they traded as the bullion they were intended to be and as a result will never grade as a 70. Unsearched rolls are like hen's teeth and the possibility to make a 70 these days is slim to none.

I would comment in greater depth if this was an intelligent thread, but it is quite ignorant, so I won't be suckered in. As for ModernCoinMart selling PCGS coins, we are doing it because we think they also have a good product. There are good coins and not so good coins in every service's holder. I see it every day. If you buy only the holder, well, you are in my opinion making a big mistake. That said, we don't sell ICG or ANACS but only because of lesser liquidity and lesser market acceptance issues.

I tend to disagree with you and your strong support of PCGS.
NGC respectable? Yes. In the realm of MS68-69-70, any company that can grade consistently within one grade (or even two), I consider to be respectable.
I don't know how NGC and PCGS work in terms of grading moderns. The perception is that PCGS has stricter standards. Perhaps. We may not know the reason. Perhaps PCGS uses 10x magnification whereas NGC only uses 7x. Who knows? But, except for the annual proof and silver proofs sets every year, I don't collect moderns. I don't try to see if I can get MS70's.
Another thing perhaps is that I believe PCGS is more likely to err on the side of caution, especially with coppers and higher grades. This is probably because of their grade guarantee policy.

I sent in 15 different PCGS PR69DCAM coins for NGC to cross and put in three multi-holders when my daughter was born back in 2005. They crossed 12 to 69UCAM and graded 3 of them as PR68DCAM. In this case, they were tougher on moderns than PCGS.

I can tell you I have NEVER had a grade 70 cross from NGC to PCGS. Not one, nadda. My first 70s were all NGC and none crossed so I dumped them maybe 7 or 8 years ago.
Even when you look at the stats for eagles you see that NGC is 70 happy. Anyone in that market will tell you a NGC 70 is a 69+ at best. Do an eBay search on ANY grade 70 eagle and the PCGS price with be much higher. You can blame it on marketing or ignorance or whatever but it is what it is.
My stance is that I collect the coin but that coin needs to end up in a PCGS holder, period.
what does that really tell you? either you aren't getting the coins before they are going to PCGS multiple times for crossover or PCGS just isn't crossing NGC 70's. because the odds are that if you are getting fresh 70's from any service, some of them should cross.

My position is strictly in regard to the modern eagles. I am fully convinced that NGC is probably better with classics and I am not bashing NGC in general. I do get defensive when I get a slew of replies that attack any semblance of credibility I might possibly have. You are right and my opinion is just that and I fully expect disagreement but like I said, these bigots that attack me on an issue they have zero experience in is maddening. Troll I'm called. I made my first MS70 on a 2001 $10. The pre-2002 grade MS70 coins are hard to come by. Not too many people thought to collect them back then so they traded as the bullion they were intended to be and as a result will never grade as a 70. Unsearched rolls are like hen's teeth and the possibility to make a 70 these days is slim to none.
