My 17th Birthmark Die - man, did NGC blow this one!

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Number 17 arrived today:

image
image

It's in an MS66 (no cam) holder, but it's a slam dunk cameo! In fact, it's stronger than one of my NGC UCAM examples. image

It's from the same submission as my 16th example, which is also contrasted but not slam dunk cameo. This was apparently a larger submission of 1967 SMS Kennedys, and I've seen multiple examples appear recently, (only a couple BM die examples so far). None of them graded cameo, so I think the graders just went in to auto mode as they went through the submission and didn't designate this one as it should have been.

Nice one. I think that looks at least CAM to me.

I don't know. You'll probably need to ask the dealer I bought it from.

Rackin' them up Russ. I agree with you about the CAM. If that isn't a CAM then I need to sell off the ones I have that I will be sending in. Too bad none of them are birthmarks. image

    Nice coin!

So you did not submit? Bought it cheap from a dealer because NGC missed?

Next step PCGS crossover and then a designation review if necessary?

Correct. Got it for $35 shipped.

<< <i>Next step PCGS crossover and then a designation review if necessary? >>

No crossover. I'll just crack it out and submit it raw. It's also a slam dunk cameo at PCGS.

Looks like several of my early 50's proofs that I've submitted and got no CAM designation.

I gotten that sort of treatment from both the big two. Had one resubmission get downgraded from a 65 to a 63 and still no CAM and it's DCAM all day long.

Hmmm........ I wonder why my submissions have gone down 90% over the last couple of years?

I'm just a nobody, but now they're taking a bite out of the big dog. Doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence, but at least I know it's not just me.

The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."

Did you find it online or you have a standing order with every dealer in the country? You seem to find a lot of nice cam/dcam gems.

    Great find by the way.

Whats the diff between the dies?

That's pretty sweet. Looks like a no-brainer cam at any service. NGC must have been out to lunch the day that coin was graded. Nice snag and you are only a few away from an entire box full of birthmark dies.

Just goes to show that you can find good deals out there if you have the time to dig them out.

The primary die marker is the shiny patch that appears in Kennedy's hair above the sideburn near the forehead. There are also two secondary markers. Here's a stronger example where the primary is more visible, and the secondaries are circled:

There are also multiple reverse diagnostics, but the Cult Of The Birthmark Die would revoke my membership if I revealed them. image

Nice to see there is consistency at least as far as the grade goes. 66 at both companies.

Congrats on the BM additions and the CAM designations.
