These fires are such a horrible thing. I have been praying for everyone there. Yes, if you aren't gone - get that way now. I have been wondering if terrorists started those fires. We had the same kind of thing in our area last year due to a very severe drought - but nothing nearly of that capacity. It is very scary.
I attended a friend's funeral on Friday and two others have evacuated their homes in San Diego county yesterday. Things can be replaced, people can't. Stay safe.

I am back at home. Actually, I returned later in the day on Tuesday after taking my 9 year old son to his mom's house a few miles away. The area was still under a voluntary evacuation, but we were told that our neighborhood was under control. Thank you to everyone for the prayers, kind words and support. When I started this thread on Tuesday morning, I was very stressed. The fire that I posted was just way too close and my neighbor (he has lived here for 20 years) told me that it was "not looking good." I truly accepted the fact that I was going to lose everything other than what was in our car. Amazingly, the fire fighters were able to extinguish this fire and many homes were saved. What most people don't know is that many of the fire fighters were trapped while trying to save the homes and had to deploy there emergency fire tents. They were later reprimanded for doing so, as that is considered a last resort. Talk about true heros. Shortly thereafter, the fire won the battle and spread to the Cleveland National Forest where it continues to burn at this hour, but at least the efforts of these selfless fighters saved many homes and lives. I am utterly amazed at the organization and skill of both law enforcement officials and fire fighters in this area. These men and women stayed awake for days fighting the flames and keeping the peace. The skies have been filled with an armada of planes and choppers for two day and it is a scene that you would have to see to appreciate.
The images below show the continuation of that initial fire which, by the way, was believed to be the work of an arsonist. Actually, they now believe that it was set by a fire fighter and an arrest has been made. 13 homes were lost and thousands of acres of national forest were burnt. This is the Santiago Fire that you are seeing on the news. It was started intentionally on Sunday and burned all around my neighborhood. As of this evening (Wednesday) it is considered to be 30% contained. The air is choked with smoke and debris, something that no photo can capture.
To those who say that people who live in this area should expect such disasters, I can only say that I can empathize with both sides of the argument. It is true that this area is better left to nature, since the water supply is so limited and the land is arid. However, one must consider the fact that where we live is sometimes influenced by circumstances in life that offer little choice. In my situation, I moved from Michigan to California because my ex-wife remarried and moved to this area. We have joint custody and flying our son back and forth was too much for a young boy, so I moved. Regardless of why we live in one area or another, disasters happen everywhere and everyday.
Keeping this coin related, I am pleased to report that no numismatic items were damaged or lost in this event, at least in my case. I have since moved everything (except for the library) to a larger bank vault. I was not aware of this wild fire problem in Southern California until I moved here.

It was reported on our news that the possible perpetraitor of the Irvine fire was a firefighter. If true it wouldn't be a new occurence. Case in point...alluding to a past fire in my area, the Oakland, CA firestorm of 1991 (almost 4000 homes destroyed, many more destroyed than in the current fires so far) it was found that the culprit was a volunteer fireman who was an aspiring full-time fireman. He had set the fire intentionally so he could report the fire and be the "hero" who would extinguish it before reinforcements arrived. Unfortunately for him and the Oakland hills at large, the fire that he had set intentionally grew out of control only moments after being set, aided by 40 mph winds. I was in junior high school in 1991, and my school's then principal was a resident of the fire area. While her house was damaged, it was the only house on her street that was not a total loss.
Fortunately for Southern California, an onshore flow and cooler temperatures are forecasted for Thursday and the rest of the week.

Thankfully you are okay. Let's hope the rest of these fires can be put out quickly. I consider firefighters (among others) to be true heroes. The vast majority are honest, hardworking people who deserve our support. When they ask for donations, try to help them out as much as you can.

What Lee said. The good news is she can't do that again. In CA you can't leave the state with a joint custody kid w/o the other custodian's approval.
Glad you're ok and back in your home. Firefighters are heros. They choose that profession because it fits them. Not enough good things can be said about them. My neighbor 2 doors down and the stepfather of my son's favorite playmate is a fire capt for the Dept of Forestry. He got promoted into a command position or he might have been hurt in this fire. The two firefighters in a medically induced coma are under his command. One is his ex partner and one is the replacement partner. He's pretty shook up. I'm glad they saved your house and glad you appreciate it like you do.
