They probably polled the half that don't speak english, are clogging our health care system, ruining our welfare system and bringing staff infections and TB back into the country.
About half of Americans voted in a way different from me in the past two presidential elections. Some ridiculous percentage of Americans believe, against all rational evidence, in UFOs, six-day universal creation, the concept of luck over statistics, that spraying a deodorizing chemical in a room freshens it up, that the banker on Deal or No Deal is really a banker, etc etc etc
If I want to know if we are in a recession, I sure as heck am not cold-calling average, decidely uninformed Jethros for their opinions. I hate opinions polls almost as much as the credence they are afforded.
The 70's "stagflationary" recession was somewhat similar. Some of the people prospered who were into hard assets and the other side did not do so good who had paper assets. Gold and coins prospered during this slow recessionary period. But in the last 2 recessions of 1990-1995 and 1980-1982, coins did not fare so well. At least not the ones that fared well in 1989 and 1979.
<< <i>Half of Americans think that the economy is in a recession CNN Poll.
Can't be good for the coin market...
>>
Critical thinking would have prevented your conclusion that half of Americans thinking that would be bad for the coin market. What those folks think has no bearing on the coin market. After all, there is no recession, CNN just wanted to find out if their negative economic reporting was having the desired negative impact in it's viewers. That only 51% felt that way must have been a blow to CNN.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is a recession bad for the coin market? I mean rare is rare isn't it, it just take more UDS to buy them? Or is it just bad for moderns?
And I suppose if it is bad for the mordern market, then there will be some good deals to be had if you convert from silver/gold that was bought a while back and then buy the moderns with cash?

Somewhat paradoxically, higher bearish sentiment has more often than not been a bullish leading indicator, at least for the stock market. Sure as hell not today, though.
It doesn't really matter if they are right or wrong about a recession, what matters is how they react to what they believe and if they do thinks differently with their spending.
Recession: Is a decline in any country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), or negative real economic growth, for two or more successive quarters of a year
Considering that the previous qtr had positive growth, by definition there is abosolutly no way we are in a recession, we might be in a quarter of negative growth, but not a recession. Only after your first quarter of negative growth could you predict if the next quarter will be negative, thus a recession.
Just like in poker, every hand makes somebody happy. If you're a buyer, a down market is a beautiful thing. If you're liquidating in a down market, it sucks to be you.

It is amazing how many d*amned fools there are out there..... they would not know a recession, since the fools are always p*issing their money away and cannot hold a decent job to begin with... their intelligence is sub par. Cheers, RickO
More people than normal are in financial trouble judging by the ridiculous number of forclosure notices in my local paper. Probably more collectors than normal will be selling off their coins to pay the bills. Bigger than normal supply and a smaller than normal demand. Can't be good.
That the country has had a negative savings rate for the last two years might have something to do with feelings of impending economic doom in the US. A lot of people are living on credit cards while they keep up a strong facade...this is true of the federal government also.

And they want the public to save for their retirement??? To privatize Social Security????
People will spend for their immediate needs....... What good is saving for your old age, if you don't lsurvive till then???
Reminds me of the variation of the old Jack Benny routine of him being mugged... Mugger says: "Your money or your life"....... The answer being : "take my life, I need my money for my old age".... (Benny's answer, after an appropriate pause: "I'm thinking, I'm thinking")
I sold the roll of fifty that I bought in a hoard. I did not photograph many of the coins. A guy asked me how much and I said FIFTY BUCKS. He whipped out fifty and POOF, they were gone. This ugly old reverse was another one that was in there. It was missing the E in "ONE" CENT as you can see.

I suspect that the "negative savings rate" of households is a myth built on an incomplete set of data. For an example close to home, do you think that economists count your coin collections as "savings"? Of course they don't, but they should.

Definitely not as liquid as cash. Someone knows better than me but I would guess that 80% + of coins in collections are not worth much more than face value or intrinsic value when push comes to shove.
i'm confused, are we in a recession or aren't we?? i thought i knew until i read this thread and started wondering which side of the equation i was on...................

Are you getting out, brother?
A recession is when your neighbor is out of work
A depression is when you're out of work.
I am not aware of a very high unemployment level, so can it really be a recession?

16 % of Americans have an IQ less than 84.
