Let's use the Socratic method.. Would YOU accept that coin as problem free?

    Me neither

I think it would BB because of that ding, but with that said, I do not think it is all that distracting. It would be nice for a Dansco, IMO.

Here's my take........the coin has AU-53 detauls, but has 3 problems. 1st, the obvious rim ding, second, it appears to have some scratches or large hairlines/slidemarks, most noticaby on the chin and in the fields next the chin and forhead. Lastly, there is verdigree/corrosion on the reverse. The coin would bodybag at PCGS. This date is readily available in problem free grades from AU-50 to MS-64, and is the least expensive coppernickel Indian. I personally would hold out for a better example. Here is a true slider that I have in my 7070. I grade the coin AU-58 with great luster and strike. The coin could easily go 63 on a good day. BTW, I picked this coin up for 100 bucks.

Definite bag candidate. Zero percent chance of PCGS plastic. Pretty good chance of AU50 or better, but not in major TPG plastic.

  • Yes, BB. This coin may have been buried at one point--there are traces of verdigris on both sides, and possible spot tool marks on the obverse. As a rule of thumb, it is not financially worth sending a coin to a TPG for grading unless the coin is problem-free and retails for at least $350-$400 or so.

    That coin was never buried.

This is what a copper-nickel Indian cent looks like after a century or so in the ground.

It was dug this month by one of our MD Forum members.

Aside from the rim nick and a few scuffs, that is not a bad looking Indian. Not worth slabbing, but it would look nice in an album.

AU-50 is about the right grade, but bagged for the rim damage.

BB... but good for an album.... not worth the submission effort. Cheers, RickO

Pity about the ding and PVC damage...

    Nice coin otherwise...

Speak for yourself on that one. I have bought many, many coins at $2-5 apiece, sent them in at $18 and then sold them for $50-200. The profits easily cancel out the coins that don't work.

Unfortunately, PCGS will not slab it for damage...
ANACS will slab it, but will be labled as "rim damage" AU 50 details...

  • I would not buy that coin.

It definitely has AU details but the massive rim gash kills it.image Album material in my opinion.

On another note, it cracks me up when individuals say "Oh, it's only a $50 coin so it shouldn't be graded or in plastic." Financial gain is not the only reason coins are graded.
