Another "possible" 1916-D Merc on eBay

dohdoh Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭
Not a Real 1916-D

This coin isn't even close to being a real 1916-D. This guy has listed "possible" 1916-D Mercs 3 times in the past few months. I don't see how eBay doesn't realize it's a scam. Actually, I don't realize how the people buying the coins don't realize it's a scam. I don't know who's worse, the person selling this junk or the people actually buying it.

I assume this guy has been discussed before, but I just had to bring it up again image

How on earth can there be a "full refund" with a "15% restocking fee"? A 15% restocking fee means the customer isn't getting a full (100%) refund, but only an 85% refund! image

I pointed this out to eBay on one of this seller's other auctions, but eBay of course did nothing about it. image Maybe if enough people complain, they might get off their you-know-what and actually do something.

  • What am I missing here? I know a little bit about mercs, and my eyes are still pretty sharp, but if you can make out, from tht pic,
that the mintmark is not a 'D' then I must need glasses. I've looked as his other 2 'possible' 16-Ds that he's sold, and I could not
tell that the were definitely NOT 16-Ds. They could be, but from his crappy pics, you can't really tell. They are both genuine 1916 dimes,
but the mintmark cannot be determined from those pics. He did get positive feedback from both buyers, one of whom buys only coins.
There are hundreds of FA-AG 16-D mercs on the market, so, all I'm saying is, there's no way you can say for certain that the coin is not a real 16-D.
I wouldn't bid on a 'possible' 16-D, and you probably wouldn't either, but some people are dumb enough to risk $200 on a coin that may only be worth
    10 cents.
  • Now, come on! Which coin do you believe this could POSSIBLY be? A 1916-D or S?

    Bid 'em up!

D mint marks on these coins were set deep in the die. They are easy to see even on worn out coins. If there is any doubt it is an S.

Not a 1901-S Quarter from the same seller

At least one person asked how I could be sure this was, in fact, NOT a real 1916-D...well, now the guy is listing a "possible" 1901-S Quarter. So, I can say with certainty that that the coin was NOT a 1916-D and this coin is NOT a 1901-S because this seller has a history of selling "possible coins."

We all have looked through thousands of coins in our lifetimes and surely have found a few "possibles." But this guy, c'mon, he seems to find them all the time and they go right to eBay. It's a class-less thing to do in my humble opinion.

  • I was at a show one time and a dealer had a '16-D in his case and the price was right so I asked to look at it. I couldn't for the life of me find the D but he insisted it was there. Even under magnification. I didn't argue with the guy but I find it amazing that people fall for this crap.

Firstly, you really don’t' have to charge 15% restocking fees if you sell Legitimate coins!

He 'could' have taken a very close up image and or shown it in negative (details usually show up better in the negative image) but, that would take the mystery out of it!
