It is with a heavy heart, and a lump in my throat, that I paste the email that I received, seconds ago, announcing the sale of the Three Rivers Collection of Southern Gold. I will be checking out Winter's site on Monday, no doubt as a weepy mess, as I view the end of a collecting era. Here is the email:

Douglas Winter Numismatics (www.raregoldcoins.com) is proud to announce that it has been chosen to sell selections from the Three Rivers Collection of United States coinage. The majority of the coins that DWN has been chosen to sell are branch mint half eagles that have been graded and encapsulated by PCGS.
The owner of this collection became interested in rare date gold coinage approximately five years ago. He decided to focus on two areas in his collection: affordable but choice, original examples of popular branch mint issues from Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans plus a small core group of important issues with historic connections.
The coins in this collection were carefully selected by the owner for their originality. As he became more and more involved in numismatics, he quickly learned how scarce coins with original color and surfaces were and his quest was to find examples that were far above average for the grade.
Highlights of the Three Rivers Collection include the following:
A nearly complete set of Dahlonega half eagles with most of the coins in EF and AU grades. This includes affordable examples of such popular issues as the 1838-D and 1842-D Large Date as well as many other PCGS graded EF and AU examples that would be ideal for type collectors.
A small but select group of No Motto New Orleans half eagles featuring a superb PCGS AU53 1847-O (in an old green label holder), an AU58 1856-O (also in an old holder) and nice examples of the 1843-O Small Letters, 1855-O and 1857-O among others.
Miscellaneous rare gold coins including such desirable items as an 1865 Three Dollar in PCGS AU55, an 1808 half eagle graded AU58 by PCGS and an unusually choice PCGS VF35 1870-CC half eagle.
Coins in this collection range in price from under $1,000 to over $10,000 and truly include something for everyone.

really, you need Silestone, sold at Home Depot. Got it in the kitchen and it is very nice...better than granite in a few ways too. Price is quite comparable. Check it out.

Seriously, granite backsplashes are out. You need to have full decorative tile between the cabinets and the countertop. Anything less is simply out of date.

from what they were 5 years ago. no thanks. many other half eagles

As for my financial performance goes, some coins made me money, some lost me money, some are break even. Overall, it's nearly break even. When you consider the dividend of fun and friendship, it was highly profitable. Interestingly, I have kept the coins that will net me the greatest gains, the most illiquid, and the ones that I am buried deepest in. I appreciate your concern.

it appears southern gold has risen right along with the price of gold
the last years. just many times more then its intrinsic value. buying
coins close to melt that are appealing to me sounds like a good way
to go.

That is good news! I just do not wish to participate at current levels.
Spending 2500 on a coin that has more available then some P and S
dates seems foolish when it is currently in vouge for original pieces.

Though I never expected it, granite is quite a bit less expensive than Corian up here in Canada. Maybe half the price.

I thought I would hang on to them longer, too, but plans, priorities, and interests change. I am half as interested in my coin collection as I was a year ago, and, as a result, I am selling about half the collection. It makes sense to me.
