The Three Rivers Collection will be available on Monday...
It is with a heavy heart, and a lump in my throat, that I paste the email that I received, seconds ago, announcing the sale of the Three Rivers Collection of Southern Gold. I will be checking out Winter's site on Monday, no doubt as a weepy mess, as I view the end of a collecting era. Here is the email:
DWN TO SELL SELECTIONS FROM THE THREE RIVERS COLLECTION
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Douglas Winter Numismatics (www.raregoldcoins.com) is proud to announce that it has been chosen to sell selections from the Three Rivers Collection of United States coinage. The majority of the coins that DWN has been chosen to sell are branch mint half eagles that have been graded and encapsulated by PCGS.
The owner of this collection became interested in rare date gold coinage approximately five years ago. He decided to focus on two areas in his collection: affordable but choice, original examples of popular branch mint issues from Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans plus a small core group of important issues with historic connections.
The coins in this collection were carefully selected by the owner for their originality. As he became more and more involved in numismatics, he quickly learned how scarce coins with original color and surfaces were and his quest was to find examples that were far above average for the grade.
Highlights of the Three Rivers Collection include the following:
A nearly complete set of Dahlonega half eagles with most of the coins in EF and AU grades. This includes affordable examples of such popular issues as the 1838-D and 1842-D Large Date as well as many other PCGS graded EF and AU examples that would be ideal for type collectors.
A small but select group of No Motto New Orleans half eagles featuring a superb PCGS AU53 1847-O (in an old green label holder), an AU58 1856-O (also in an old holder) and nice examples of the 1843-O Small Letters, 1855-O and 1857-O among others.
Miscellaneous rare gold coins including such desirable items as an 1865 Three Dollar in PCGS AU55, an 1808 half eagle graded AU58 by PCGS and an unusually choice PCGS VF35 1870-CC half eagle.
Coins in this collection range in price from under $1,000 to over $10,000 and truly include something for everyone.
The Three Rivers Collection will be posted on the DWN website (www.raregoldcoins.com) on Monday, September 24th at approximately 9 a.m. Pacific time. Please check our website as close to this time as possible to get an early shot at buying the coins that are of the greatest interest to you.

LOL Everyday, a new bomb gets dropped. I feel like the Brits in WWII. Speaking of which, not only do we need granite countertops, I understand that we also need granite backsplashes. I asked my wife if we were building a kitchen or a bunker.

Assuming you have a basement, don't forget to get the floors reinforced first

I'm a big fan of Corian. I don't want no stinkin' rocks in my kitchen.

really, you need Silestone, sold at Home Depot. Got it in the kitchen and it is very nice...better than granite in a few ways too. Price is quite comparable. Check it out.
And best of luck with the sale!

Seriously, granite backsplashes are out. You need to have full decorative tile between the cabinets and the countertop. Anything less is simply out of date.
<< <i>Robert---- It would appear that your wife is now embarking on her 5 year plan. Good luck with your sale. Don't worry the cycle will spin full turn in good time. Take care. Bob [supertooth] >>

Not to get back on topic or anything, but do you think that D. Winter has enough bandwidth (I'm just pretending to know what "bandwidth" means) to handle all the traffic that will hit his website on Monday?
coins he sold last year!!!!
what a great hobby.

Maybe if I just keep pressing the refresh button all day, the site will lock up, and RYK will get to keep his coins and stay in the hobby.

<< <i>excellent! another dealer gets to make MORE money off the same
coins he sold last year!!!!
what a great hobby. >>
fc, I'm quite sure that RYK would have entertained a competitive offer from you. Too bad you didn't make one. You could have kept this travesty of a dealer making money from selling coins he had previously sold from happening.

same goes for you fattie. i have a feeling very few of ryk's purchases
made money for him. i think only this certain dealer has a chance to
allow ryk to save face and allow the dealer to make a killing.
otherwise, maybe ryk thought he would take a hit on every coin
if he sold them at auction himself and cut out the dealers???
but ryk never mentioned how much he pays or anything like that.
i just assume.
edited to add: all i know is i am not buying coins that are over priced
from what they were 5 years ago. no thanks. many other half eagles
to pursue until this southern craze dies down.

Post some of your coins so we can all share in the obvious joy you derive from this hobby.

fc, it amazes me how you can say so much, and at the same time show how little you know. You just go ahead and continue buying those pieces that move with melt. You understand those coins and I have always preached, collect only what you understand.
<< <i>You understand that I have always preached, collect only what you understand. >>
This explains why he's never posted a coin.

<< <i>Seriously, granite backsplashes are out. You need to have full decorative, hand-painted, Venetian ceramic tile between the cabinets and the countertop. Anything less is simply out of date.
Lou, you are not advising Mrs. RYK, are you. Perhaps she is employing your firm in exchange for decorating advice.

FatMan, we have ceramic tile, too. I have no idea how we are cramming it all in.
same goes for you fattie.
fc, I can take the digs and shots, but I will not tolerate you calling my friend, "fattie"!
As for my financial performance goes, some coins made me money, some lost me money, some are break even. Overall, it's nearly break even. When you consider the dividend of fun and friendship, it was highly profitable. Interestingly, I have kept the coins that will net me the greatest gains, the most illiquid, and the ones that I am buried deepest in. I appreciate your concern.

it appears southern gold has risen right along with the price of gold
the last years. just many times more then its intrinsic value. buying
coins close to melt that are appealing to me sounds like a good way
to go.
collect only what you understand
I guess ryk did not understand because he is selling most everything
he bought in the last few years? I fully understand and have left
that sector of half eagles alone. I cannot afford the pieces i would
like to own AND hang on to them long term. hm. So why get into it?
It seems i fully understand.
fc, I can take the digs and shots, but I will not tolerate you calling my friend, "fattie"!
hm. i did not think stretching fatman to fattie was a huge insult...
just a play on his nickname. sorry to upset you. just sorta ironic
you know?
Overall, it's nearly break even
That is good news! I just do not wish to participate at current levels.
Spending 2500 on a coin that has more available then some P and S
dates seems foolish when it is currently in vouge for original pieces.
I really thought you were going to hang onto them long term...
I have always thought that most of the coins you buy, you were never going to sell them for what you paid.
i guess your relationship with your dealer worked out in this case.
lucky the demand is still there for your area of interest.
ex-ryk coin
i consider this a wise purchase. quite rare and nicely priced.
Is that a staple scratch running diagonally across the left side of the obverse?

Though I never expected it, granite is quite a bit less expensive than Corian up here in Canada. Maybe half the price.

Sweet kitchen. I don't know about the counters but love the ceramic tile and that humongous frig.
BigE,
Thanks for the tip re: the Subzero. I have not had the pleasure of meeting you in person, but those who have met me can vouch for the fact that I am not built for moving Subs'; I'll leave that to the burly guys who deliver them.
fc,
I thought I would hang on to them longer, too, but plans, priorities, and interests change. I am half as interested in my coin collection as I was a year ago, and, as a result, I am selling about half the collection. It makes sense to me.
<< <i>Guys, we have a first-rate contractor, architect, and engineer. I have no concerns about the structural stability of the remodeling gig. Thank you for your concern.
