What is the long term outlook for Silver Proof Sets?

I usually buy one proof set per year and a silver proof set. I do not check the past prices, but I understand that the 1999(?) one is worth quite a lot of money as compared to the original purchase price from the Mint. After I receive them, I always intend to bring them to the safe deposit box, but I never seem to get around to doing it. There are quite a few building up on a shelf, and I realized yesterday after cleaning out a room, that I need to get to the bank this weekend.

It seems that the Mint is selling more and more "stuff". I am almost at the point of asking why I need another silver proof set this year, because it will just get put on top of the stack of other modern stuff. Does anyone have any idea of the past price history of these silver proof sets, and what is your opinion of the long term outlook?

Long term, who knows? Over the past couple of years their performance has been dismal. There is just too much "stuff" being turned out by the mint. Collectors are exausted and I wouldn't be surprised if sales of silver proof sets drop sharply after 2008, when the State Quarters series ends.

They will go up, unless they fall in value or flatline.

When silver hits 50 bucks in the next 4 or 5 years you'll have $100 setsimage

I must admit that I'm also suckered into buying the Silver Proof sets since 1992. The Mint did a smart thing by overlapping the President dollars with the last two years of State Quarters as now I might keep on getting the sets until the end of the program. I don't know.

I'm doing the same silly thing...stacking up the sets. It's sort of compulsive. I'm probably not looking at a net loss yet (because of 1999), but sometimes I wonder why I do it. Occasionally, I open up all those sets and look at those beautiful proofs...then, I acquiesce as to why I still do it.

How do you define "long term"? I think the sleepers are the early years 1992-1998. There has not been much attention paid to these yet. If you mean 20 years or more then i would say you may have some winners. As others have stated though the mint is putting out too much product diverting too many dollars(and interest) elsewhere.
I usually purchase one silver proof set,one regular proof set, and one mint set per year. I wait until all are available(to save on postage costs) and then place an order. However this year the mint sets are still not yet available and who knows when they will be. The mint's product schedule simply says "fall"- whenever that will be. I will wait until then to place my order.
Most proof sets issued after 1959 have not performed very well and probably never will.

I just look at them as consumer product that you buy for your kids, like toys, trading cards, games, etc...

I just finished selling all of mine at a profit, so I don't care if they go up or down or stay the same in the future.

I buy one each of the mint, proof, and silver proof sets each year. I expect my enjoyment of them to continue long term.

I buy dupes of everything I can so my kids don't have to fight over it when I croak. Of course when I make that statement it seems to cause my wife to cry (weemun - sheesh). Of course they're gonna have to go toe to toe over that Library of Coins type set! image

These sets do not have the "feel" of investments and I think the '99 is overdue for a real fall down to maybe 2/3 or even 1/2 of its value now. That having been said, I slavishly buy one each year and one for the loyal office manager as a gift....
