Why Do Coins Tone In TPG Holders,??????????

image . I just noticed my 1940 proof quarter graded by PCGS older green label has started toning after I have owned this coin for over five years... Why now,???.. If these coins are sealed in plastic and PCGS uses a thick silicone seal to make these air tight, why is it toning now,????... I have two winged liberty dimes that are getting some wierd looking spots that looks like a thin layer of light brown gravy on them also... image ... What the Hell is going on here.. How can this be... Maybe I should crack all my coins out and put them in intercept shield holders,???????.... Should I send them back to PCGS for a refund,???... Has this happened to anybody else,??? What should I do,?????... image . image . image

I did not think most (maybe all) holders were air tight. I know for a fact some are not water tight.

TPG holders are NOT airtight... and coins will tone in holders. Even coin doctors have discovered this and used it to 'profit'... as always, the storage conditions apply. Cheers, RickO

Intercept Shield has cartons that contain 10 slab boxes. This will provide a double barrier against the entrance of airborne contaminants into a slab. I do use them for some Proof Silver Eagles in PCGS slabs.

Slightly OT -- I received a group of coins on consignment in which some of the BU Jeffs
and Rosies were toned a vivid electric-blue. Those were the coins that had been stored
in those old hard (PVC?) flips.

    There's an old saying :
I used to be "Snow White, but I've drifted". It must be true as it pertains to your coin.
If you had it for five years, it's an old holder and the coin was made in 1940, it stands to reason it will change. It's been on a few trips, not unlike the ones we are on.

I have had slabbed ASE stored in Intercept double protection boxes spot. IMO, Intercept does little to prevent spotting though it may help with unwanted toning.

They are generally air and water tight, but there is air inside of the slab which can react with the coin. The grading companies do not decontaminate the surfaces before slabbing, so a fingerprinted or improperly dipped coin can go bad rather fast, as also can happen with silver eagle spotting. I had one customer who would only buy coins slabbed in the previous generation of holder (or earlier) reasoning that if a coin hasn't toned in 3 or 4 years, it mostly like will be stable long term.

If those Proof coins were bright white when you bought them, there is a 99% chance that they are dipped before they went into the holder. Most original coins from that era have a cloudy haze on them. The haze is pretty ugly, so I don't blame people for dipping them.

To answer your question, these dipped coins will tone over time. Even if the slabs were air tight, which they are not, the air that was in the holder when the coin was sealed will go to work in the coin over time. Also if you have stored the coin in an environment where the temperatures are not steady, the coin will tone as the temps to up and down and moisture forms in the holder.

Finally consider this. Does you wife's silverware tarnish? You know it does. Coins are no different. They will tone over time. And those coins in the green label holders have been in there for nearly 20 years.

No TPG holders are gas impermable. If the slabs and coins are stored near an environment that is conducive to toning then it is likely that over time some of the coins in your slabs will toned. Also, if there is anything on the surface of the coin when it is slabbed then that will stay in contact with the coin and might accelerate the toning process.

here is how to protect against any and all toning, carbon spots, milk spots................entomb them in clear glass (colored glass if you want the illusion of toning) of course it must be safety glass in case you drop them.

  • As previously state, TPG holder do allow a transfer of air. I use Metal Safe which does penetrate the holder, and it has preserved the original look of the coins for as long as I've owned them.
Some folks used to think that the paper labels used in the older holders were causing toning, but I have never seen anything definitive.

Slabs are not air-tight. When the barometric pressure rises, air enters the slab and when the barometric pressure drops, air leaves the slab.
