The strike is actually not bad for this issue, and anybody who would dip this one should be hung by the nads.

I'm really not trying to be critical, but I think MS65 is just a hair strong. Very Nice Coin tho.

The nicks at 12 and 2, the scratches on the obv face to the right, the gouge in the center of the obv., etc.

Without those very minor flaws, the coin would be in a 66 holder. In fact, this coin is PQ for an MS65. Remember, you're looking at images that are many times the size of the actual coin.

i know strike varies across this series... what is the typical strike for 41-s? weak strong? from the photo it seems a bit weak... but I can't remember the years that are typically weak... but either way... i like it!

One of the weakest struck in the series.

I don't think 65. Hits on the left leg, really weak strike (look at the skirt lines going up the left leg and the breast feathers). Russ, it's a great pic, but I'd go 64 max.........Oh and I am with you as far as anyone dipping this beaut...........Rick

Typical weak strike the 41-s is notorious for. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the weak thumb. I thought about pulling the trigger when Feld posted this, but not quite for me. As far as it being a 65? I see nothing in the image that would indicate otherwise, even by old standards that I still go by.

I see 65-66 completely whacked up these days. Also, although folks know in their heads it's a big blown up image they still don't seem to put into perspective the actual size of the coin. They want big images, yet see a couple marks that in real life ain't nothing and call them big gashes. That's my take anyway.

Brothers, I see what looks like a partial thumb. On a 41-S Walker that's about as good as you're gonna get. I like it as a 65

That's a nice 41-S Toning looks OK I personally like more color, but that's tough on this date!

From what I have seen PCGS is pretty easy on the 41s. I would say a strong MS64. But I will say it's nicer than a PCGS MS65 I saw go for $600 on ebay a week or two ago. Or is it the same one? Yes the 41s usually has a week strike, and heavy die pollishing. This gives it the soft look on the left leg and hand. Not all of them look this way though.
This is the last time I will ever do this again

Looks like a good strike for a 41-S. I saw one the other day that was so flat in the middle it looked like a VG with luster in the fields. Sure looks like a fine 65 to me.

yup, the 41-S is certainly notorious for weak strikes, and as you mentioned, blown up pictures are equally notorious for making small imperfections look like gashes.

Here is my 41-S that is reasonably well struck for an 'S' Mint of this year, in an NGC 63 holder. My camera's macro mode tends to make the luster seem to disappear in places, this is one sharp looking coin in hand, and undergraded in my estimation. i'm gonna crack this one out and resubmit soon; i've seen way too many PCGS/NGC MS65s that are weaker struck with as many (and more!) nicks than this one. The thumb on this example is nice, and the skirt lines are fairly well detailed.

nice example you have there BTW, Russ!

To my eye, the skirt lines at the high point in the center seem clearly worn off.

Is this a poor strike, wear, or an optical illusion?

You all are well-versed on the 41-S Walkers. What I find is the TPG balance strike with contact marks to grade this issue. Strong strike with a few light scuffs/hits OR a weaker thumb with clean surfaces warrant a 65. A combination of clean surfaces with a stronger thumb/strike gets a 66.

    Russ,

    This is a sweet lady!

If you are finished with her, she is welome to my box!

I don't question the 65 at all. Much nicer!

One must remember to look at many areas on a Walker to determine how weak or strong the strike is: Head----Thumb and Finger---Center Skirt Lines----And Center of Eagle's Breast Feathers. This is true 'especially' with the "S" minted coins. And one or more areas may be weak---while other areas may be stronger struck. All on the same coin.

Russ, I love the toning on this coin and its apparent originality. I rather think that the Head and The Thumb and Finger areas are rather WELL struck for a 41S. The Center Skirt Lines and the Eagle's center breast feathers appear weaker IMHO----But, overall, this coin is a nice MS65 coin for a 41S Walker. Be a wonderful addition to virtually ANY Walker collection. Bob [supertooth]
