Do you want to make someone's day?

Ok,
I was remembering how great it felt to find coins when I was a kid. I was one who always checked pay-phones and with a fair amount of luck. So this past June when I went on vacation, we stayed at the beach. I had 3 partial rolls of wheat pennies from the 20s kicking around. They were my inlaws birth-year coins, I bought them for my inlaws to give to the grandchildren. They were ecstatic.

Back to my vacation, the 1st day I dropped about 5 in the line on the beach where all the shells would end up after a high tide. Later that day a young girl started screaming while running to her parents to show them the old penny she found on the beach. She was a good distance away but you could hear her telling her parents what she had found.

So during that week I threw about 60 more wheaties out at random over a 2 mile stretch on the beach.

When I got home I threw a few at my local park.

I have to tell you it really was a great feeling knowing that some kid was that excited over finding a wheat penny.

I now plan on getting some common full date buffalos, mercs, liberty nickels and a few standing quarters and start dropping a few here and there. Especially at the beach the next time I go back

Has anyone else done something like this? If not consider it. You will be amazed at how good it feels to make someone's day. Even if you never see them find find one, going back the next day and seeing it is gone feels good.

The best thing is they will always think it was great luck to find one.

I would just hand it to them directly. The elements may damage them or they may be forever lost.

Neat idea, though I think at least half of the beach coins will be lost forever so that would bug me. The park coins will probably have a bit higher survival rate.

    Just spend them.

Great idea no matter how you do it...the fact is that you thought enough to bring some excitement and jot into someone's day.

Actually, I started collecting coins when I was 12. I got a really old quarter in change at a movie theater and something told me to keep it. It was a 1932 S in F 12-15, and yes, 40 plus years later, I still have it. I still remember the rush I got when the cashier gave me that quarter.

I'd just give the coin to the child to make sure he / she gets it, rather than having a medal detector person find it. Reality being what it is today, I'd either do it on an occasion like Halloween, or explain to the child's parent(s) what your game plan is, so no one thinks you're a sicko.

Point of note here, two people suggested handing coins out on Halloween, just keep in mind that basically what you are doing is advertising to your neighborhood and anyone else that comes to your house that you collect coins, and maybe have some in your house.

Something I do not, and would not broadcast to even my neighbors,
    Just my thoughts,

I've stood on the boardwalk and thrown quarters out onto the beach about 100 feet in front of the metal detector guys and then sat on a bench and watched them find them. I figured a quarter is at least worth their time to pick up and it gave me something to do.

Arubans love their coins. I was called the "Deuce" man as I spent two dollar bills and the new Presidential Dollar Coins. Anyone who handled money loved to get them.

I gave a milk spotted 2006-W ASE I got back from PCGS to the daughter of the owner of a chinese take-out restaurant I frequent. She would always get excited when I paid for my order with Presidential dollars or Kennedys. Her dad wanted to buy it and I gave it to the little girl. It sure made her day.
