In the early days, before pretty much everybody started sniping, I used to get nastygrams from underbidders.

i always laugh when someone wants something and they nickel
and dime the auction. 86 bucks? geez, pop in a 150 dollar bid
5 minutes before the auction ends.

    snipers. sigh ;-)

Forward a copy of the message to the folks at eBay.
    When in doubt, don't.

Me too but sometimes I take it in the "split" with those huge snipes!

I guess the underbidder was cussing at his PC for lagging otherwise he/she mighta got that snipe in..............

I think they were joking. The clue is "they don't hate you personally" statement. The humor just did not come across very well.

I love to snipe as well. Won some and lost some.

I have to laugh at the underbidders moronic note.

If you are going to keep the item, I would simply reply "You should have bid more".

If you are not going to keep the item, then I would sell the item to the guy at a 100% profit - take it or leave it.

In either case, I would wait a week and send that message to Ebay.

I'd love to see a link to the auction.image

This might be tongue in cheek. but maybe not. the meds comment may be correct.

before the 2nd chance offer I used to buy lots of tools. When I was second bidder (or even first bidder at a price I liked) I would often message the seller asking if they had more. Many times they did. I once bought a $100 lathe cutoff tool and insert set for about $15 IIRC. It sold cheap because his description sucked and you had to know what he was trying to describe or be able to recognize a very bad photo. I messaged the seller whose other auctions were art and music and he had come on these at an auction (or some other vague method) and had about 30 more of them which I bought.--jerry

It was a non-coin item but I just appreciated the emotion displayed. It is a collectible but 20 something people buy them some times to play with like paint ball guns. I suspect this was a young person and I politely answered through the eBay system that there was another available on eBay at a minimum bid of $150. I got this one to keep for a few years.
Some years ago when I sniped an item I had a Coast Guard Chief email me and tell me " to come out and bid like a man. " I thought about it for awhile but decided I would rather keep the money in my pocket.

I got one from an underbidder who was absolutely CONVINCED that I had hacked eBay. We made almost equally ridiculous snipes on a WLH. I was still wondering if I had made a horrible mistake, when I received a message demanding to know how I knew what he had bid. The bidding had kind of peaked in the low $100 range, and we both sniped in the $275-ish range. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I beat him by one increment. I told him I would sell him the coin if I didn't like it, but I did, and kept it.

That is great. See, I have that same sense of humor and would write something similar. Probably a little more friendly, but the same type of message.

One time in my early days on eBay, a fella outbid me in the final moment, on a commemorative 1905 Lewis & Clark gold dollar in about MS65 . I sent him a note calling him a "dog". He wrote back with a smiley face and typed: "every dog gets his bone".

Some messages are intended as congratulatory , but teasing comments and sometimes people can go bark up a tree. image

I have a cable modem service that, because there are too many people hooked in for the available bandwidth (this is NYC we're talking about), always seems to hang up for a few seconds atthe most inopportune moments.

So I always use a sniping service.

I alway bid the last 10 seconds the highest I am willing to pay. Usually get it for a lot less, and I usually win.
