I thought that they started with a 2 coin set in 1987, and went to 4 coins in 1988.

You are correct, Sir. The 4 coin proof sets started in 1988.

The mint has been making the four-coin set since 1988.

They only made the one-ouncer in 1986, and in 1987 they made a two-coin set, consisting of a one ounce and a half ounce.

So why are some years more expensive than others? From the mint that is? The coins have the same amount of gold in them. Some of them are 900 dollars and some are 1400 dollars. What is the difference...as far as the mint is concerned? What makes this years worth 1400 and some older ones worth 900?

Four example the mint is now selling the 2003 Four Gold Coin Proof Set for $1,098.00
The 1994 set - same four pieces - $999 image
    This year...$1400

OH - I see now. So you can't ORDER these old sets? That is what I asked earlier...for a source to order back sets and someone posted this link
    http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/american_eagles/index.cfm?action=american_proof#salesTable

Those are just the prices from back then. The mint does not sell back dates then? Is that correct?

I don't think those are for sale? I might be missing something image if so then let me know. I meant a source to purchase old sets.
