GR Tiso and His Inventory

I was reading through the latest issue of Coin World and I stumbled upon an ad from GR Tiso featuring Walkers, Morgans and Peace Dollars for sale. Most of his listings seem to feature some really nice coins but with rudimentary descriptions. Yet, I noticed that EVERY coin he has listed is described as PQ, PQ+, PQ++, etc.

Assuming that PQ means premium quality, are GR Tiso's coins really PQ, or does he exaggerate the quality of his coins? Does anybody have direct experience with dealing with GR Tiso, and how nice were the coins offered in comparison to his descriptions?

do you think it is even possible that EVERY coin in any dealer's inventory (if the dealer has more than 100 coins) could truly be PQ?

    I don't

    I've never dealt with him.

However, whenever someone says PQ that many times it takes the power away from the word

Even the fussiest of the fussiest dealers on the show circuit probably don't have more than 25% of their coins as truly PQ.
The ones that state it the most, typically fall far below the 25% range.

Perhaps not all PQ . . but a nice guy to deal with. I saw him at Las Vegas last year . . .

Gus Tiso is fine to work with. He has been around for a long time, and in the words of Laura, Gus is not a wannabe.

Regardless of the denomination of a coin or who you deal with, a "PQ" adjective is subjective. A coin that is considered PQ to someone may not be so in the opinion of another person.

I came across Gus at one show and every time I went to his table he was on his cell phone arguing with someone, with his back to the people. I don't care if the coins are PQ, that just plain sucked. Made me think he was bad news, but everyone has a bad day. In terms of poor customer attention, that was an all-time low. I think I waited two hours and I saw his back every time.

Another time I came across Gus and he had probably 400-500 morgans on hand, but only one caught my eye. He said it was PQ and was as good as sold. If that was true then don't show the coin I thought. Next day I returned with microscope in hand (he must remember this -- hey Gus), and the coin just flat out sucked eggs.

Another time I came across Gus and he probably had 500-ish morgans on hand, and one caught my eye. It was in fact PQ. He only owned it a short time. Turns out it had come out of a Heritage auction a few months earlier. I doubt he bought it there. I was looking at it there online but couldn't pull the trigger. I should have. Got the same coin from Gus for about $400 more. For me it was worth it, but that is the only PQ coin I've seen in his hands.

    I brake for ear bars.

Gus is a good guy. I've bought from him for years and he pretty much has enough Morgans of different dates to put together a complete set. He uses PQ a lot because he likes his coins. In that regard he's no different than any other dealer. My assessment of PQ agrees with him about 25% of the time.
    When in doubt, don't.

Gus is a longtime survivor with silver dollars. Very knowledgeable and certainly would expect him to try to stock PQ coins. Calling them all PQ? Lots of collectors do too. Judge each for yourself. I have done some business with him and even cherried a 7/TF 1878 Morgan from him in a gem 7TF rev78 PCGS holder. Not easy to do at all.

An awful lot of coins are going to suck eggs if you throw a microscope at 'em....

Tiso is to Morgans like J Cline is the SLQs. You'll find a very good selection of high end Morgans in Tiso's cases.

I completely agree- for me, pq can only be used for coins that really stand out from a group and are very limited. Some people just overhype everything they have, and it makes me doubt even the better pieces they have...

well, ive dealt with gus for a long time and never had any problems and i would have to say most of his coins are better than just making the grade. some of his coins are truly pq without making the next grade. he is an honest hardworking individual.

I may be mistaken, but I think he may use the PQ as a scale. PQ+ is a little PQ, PQ++ is more PQ, and PQ+++ is very PQ. So I don't know if he is calling every coin PQ or just using that descriptor as a scale.

I have bought one coin from him, I would consider it PQ, but I bought it sight seen at the Charlotte show.

    Seems logical to me.

I have done much business for many years with Gus. He is one of the more reputable dealers on my list.
He is a low markup, high volume dealer who does try to provide better than average coins at a reasonable price.
Calling all his coins "pq" is a little quirk that is easy to overlook in light of all his other fine attributes.
He really is fussy in his buying habits and it is my belief that he truly believes he has bought for resale the best coins he can find.
To me a pq coin is one that can not be bought for less than premium money. Sometimes a lot more money.
Gus sells better than average coins at only a slight increase over sheet prices.
His mo is to mark them Pq + to pq ++++ with the multiple plusses selling for more than a single plus. So you should be able to find the right coin at the right price in his showcase.
He usually does a land office business at all shows, with hundreds of repeat customers.
I have never had a problem reselling coins I buy from him. I expect to do a lot more business with him in the future. Dave W
