GR Tiso and His Inventory
I was reading through the latest issue of Coin World and I stumbled upon an ad from GR Tiso featuring Walkers, Morgans and Peace Dollars for sale. Most of his listings seem to feature some really nice coins but with rudimentary descriptions. Yet, I noticed that EVERY coin he has listed is described as PQ, PQ+, PQ++, etc.
Assuming that PQ means premium quality, are GR Tiso's coins really PQ, or does he exaggerate the quality of his coins? Does anybody have direct experience with dealing with GR Tiso, and how nice were the coins offered in comparison to his descriptions?

I don't
However, whenever someone says PQ that many times it takes the power away from the word
The ones that state it the most, typically fall far below the 25% range.

Regardless of the denomination of a coin or who you deal with, a "PQ" adjective is subjective. A coin that is considered PQ to someone may not be so in the opinion of another person.

Another time I came across Gus and he had probably 400-500 morgans on hand, but only one caught my eye. He said it was PQ and was as good as sold. If that was true then don't show the coin I thought. Next day I returned with microscope in hand (he must remember this -- hey Gus), and the coin just flat out sucked eggs.
Another time I came across Gus and he probably had 500-ish morgans on hand, and one caught my eye. It was in fact PQ. He only owned it a short time. Turns out it had come out of a Heritage auction a few months earlier. I doubt he bought it there. I was looking at it there online but couldn't pull the trigger. I should have. Got the same coin from Gus for about $400 more. For me it was worth it, but that is the only PQ coin I've seen in his hands.

An awful lot of coins are going to suck eggs if you throw a microscope at 'em....

I completely agree- for me, pq can only be used for coins that really stand out from a group and are very limited. Some people just overhype everything they have, and it makes me doubt even the better pieces they have...
I have bought one coin from him, I would consider it PQ, but I bought it sight seen at the Charlotte show.

Seems logical to me.

He is a low markup, high volume dealer who does try to provide better than average coins at a reasonable price.
Calling all his coins "pq" is a little quirk that is easy to overlook in light of all his other fine attributes.
He really is fussy in his buying habits and it is my belief that he truly believes he has bought for resale the best coins he can find.
To me a pq coin is one that can not be bought for less than premium money. Sometimes a lot more money.
Gus sells better than average coins at only a slight increase over sheet prices.
His mo is to mark them Pq + to pq ++++ with the multiple plusses selling for more than a single plus. So you should be able to find the right coin at the right price in his showcase.
He usually does a land office business at all shows, with hundreds of repeat customers.
I have never had a problem reselling coins I buy from him. I expect to do a lot more business with him in the future. Dave W
The priceless ingredient in any coin transaction is the integrity of the dealer.
