1954 King Farouk Auction catalog

I picked up this 1954 Auction catalog of The Palace Collections of Egypt yesterday at a flea market for $5. It is a very interesting book that includes the listing of the 1933 double eagle.

Are there any coins in TPG slabs with the Farouk pedigree listed?

No, That would have been really cool though, even if it just had the name of the dealer or collector that used it.

Read the Kosoff book (the QDB one and the Kosoff Remembers book) for great background and stories on the sale.

When you look through that catalog and see things graded EF, remember that Baldwin used the British "EF" grade often , which could mean Gem Proof or Gem Unc by our standards today.

Rick-- have you ever thought of interviewing Storck for a special article in NN or CW for Storck's views of the sale? Since he is the last survivor, I think it would be great to get his thoughts down in writing. I would find that article interesting.

After reading the OP for this thread, I was going to mention that Maurice Storck was the last surviving dealer to attend the King Farouk sale, but Rick Snow beat me to it. Maurice ran a very successful coin business here in Portland, Maine for many years (M. A. Storck & Co.), which continues under different ownership. Maurice used to attend our local coin club meetings every once in a while and dazzle us with his old coin stories, many related to the Farouk sale. I last spoke with Maurice a couple of years ago, when I called him to ask if he remembered who bought the half dimes from the Farouk sale. He stunned me when he responded that not only did he purchase the half dimes, but that he still had them! He really should be interviewed about this and many other fascinating coin stories. Perhaps if he returns to Maine this summer, I can arrange that.

That is the last catalog I need for sales of the 1913 Liberty Nickel. Past up one at $60 and have never seen one close to that price again.

    Nice pickup.

When the sale was announced Abe Kosoff contacted the Egyptian govt. and suggested that the auction be held in the US at the summer
ANA convention arguing that attendance and prices realized would be much higher than in Cairo, his advice was ignored.

Wow, I gotta go to more flea markets! The annotations in my copy indicate prices realized (or maybe bid limits) for each lot. How about $40 for Judd-59 and $80 for Judd-64 in extremely fine?!
