Poll: Do you like it or not like it? (Gobrecht dollar)

Yesterday's installment was interesting, and quite a few people participated, so I thought I would do it again. Today's index coin will be the ever-popular and controversial Gobrecht dollar, once again a coin offered in an upcoming Heritage sale. Since TDN is forcing me to buy a pair
, I ought to learn more about these.
Here are the Heritage photographs:

Do you like it overall? What do you like/dislike about it?
Obviously, any impression is based on the photos and one's perception of how the coin may look in-hand. In real life, these decisions should not be made on the basis of photos, no matter how accurate, high-quality, or attractive. (Longacre made me add this statement

<< <i>I've seen that one before and would avoid it myself. The reverse E on the obverse right-side field is too much of a distraction for me. It's like the coin having a tattoo. >>
Looks like someone etched that with a pencil eraser.
I think you can do better than the one posted.
I voted that I liked it because I have seen some horrible re-toned dipped out proofs and this one is better than most.

Voted yes because I would be happy to own this at the right price. I find it at least... likable.
Why don't you shut off the computer, hop in the car, and go to the EAC convention? Then perhaps this Silver Silliness™ will come to an end.

It seems like most of the people saying they like this coin are doing so because they feel it would be available at a lower price than a non-marked version. I either like the coin or I don't, independent of price.
<< <i>Here's a question. For the people voting for liking the coin, do you like it as a "compromise coin" or on an absolute basis? If you had this coin, would you think of the CRO article What should you do with a sub-par coin? or would you never think this is compromise or sub-par? >>
Compromise until something better came along. Not sure I would get rid of it at that point though because even with the mark on the obverse it is not sub-par by any means.

<< <i>A dumb newbe's opinion: I like it better than the dipped white ones , however the fact that it is slabbed by NGC makes me insecure, if it was in a PCGS holder then I could see forking out that kind of money and feeling secure. Got to wonder why it isn't in a PCGS holder, if it were mine I would have sent it in to PCGS, so maybe NGC graded it higher or graded it and that was the difference. So either you are over paying for the jump in the grade or PCGS not only would lower the grade but may in fact bb for some unknown reason as slime a chance as that may be one never knows with NGC (again considering the dollars spent here). >>
Why would you say this? Some of the best coins in the world are in NGC slabs and they actually do pretty good at grading this series.
<< <i>Other then the weird "non-tone" white lines on the obverse, what's not to like? >>
That's only valid if you can get over the weird white lines.
Your argument is similar to saying a Morgan with a big gouge across Liberty's face is fine because, other than the gouge, what's not to like
... but I refuse to pay that much money for a coin with anything I would call a problem.
Overall, I like appearance of the coin very much. I am not hip to grading these, but the strike looks terrific, I do not see any rub/friction, and the look is original. The toning breaks are more of a distraction in the magnified, high light intensity shot than they are in the slab shot and could very well be the reason the coin is only a 64. I do not plan to be a bidder for it, but I will inspect it in-hand at the show.

<< <i>Is there any way a doctor could remove or diminish the toning breaks? >>
Either by AT'ing the breaks or by dipping the coin. Take your pick.
from the pics. i want original coins and that one appears to be
so. i do not mind that mark, it is a pretty good sign people have
left the coin alone and not messed with it.
it would also be fun to track back the owners of it. it must be
hard to forget a monster coin like that with the "E".
i wish i could afford it. very nice!
My b-day is coming up - maybe you'll get it as a present for me ??
(my wife is way too poor...)
<< <i>I think it's like most coins, paintings, or real estate - it depends on the price. Anyone would love it at $1.98, but might not like it at all at $1,000,000. So the answer is - it depends on the price. >>
I disagree. I think that you can like/dislike something for what it is, irrespective of the price.
BTW, what is the proper pronunciation of Gobrecht? Long "o" or short "o". I have heard it both ways.
What makes Gobrechts controversial?
I like the overall look of this piece but the mark in the obverse field is distracting. It would depend on the price.
<< <i>What makes Gobrechts controversial? >>
They're not controversial anymore. TDN has convinced RYK he needs two for his type set
Too many coins, too little money.

sort and then put my glasses on to see what it was.....It was distracting for
sure and not what I'd call pleasing to view. Perhaps if I saw it in person I
would think differently. The drab obverse color with the marks shoot it down.
Lovely reverse and great dollar design.

<< <i>If I were in the position to buy a PR64 1836 Gobrecht, I would most likely compare among those available and not choose this one. >>
Or even look at available pieces in lower grades and select one that has better eye appeal. This one doesn't do it for me.

<< <i>So what's the decision, or are you saving your funds for a Big Purchase at today's EAC convention????? >>
I was never in the running for this Gobrecht.

Just not this particular coin.

I did inspect the coin in person and liked it, but did not love it. For me, if I were spending that kind of money, I would have to love it. Of course, at the right price, I would like it enough to own it.
<< <i>however the fact that it is slabbed by NGC makes me insecure, if it was in a PCGS holder then I could see forking out that kind of money and feeling secure. >>
That being the case, there's a very pretty toned Gobrecht in a PCGS holder that you might want to pursue. Of course, you'll need to overlook the fact that it used to be white and housed in an NCS problem holder.
