a good start would be to vote everyone that is currently in, out.

try to reach the masses besides the usual coin show stuff.
seems anyone going to a coin show, does not really need the
    ANA at that point.

(their main goal to me, is to introduce the hobby... that sort of need)

is there some way to do projects that reach out to new collectors
    in unique ways?

Stop everyone on the BOG and VP and Pres from saying one thing and doing the opposite.

Institute the club officer chat room.

Work for the good of the membership, not for the good of the Executive leadership.

Rather than cutting programs like the 50 year medal, look for busineses/members to underwrite specific projects.

Do not use YN auction proceeds for the general fund.

Do not use book sale proceeds for the general fund.

Keep the Summer Seminar two weeks long.

Don't support the change in bylaws regarding the change in procedures for running for the Board, and electing officers. They'll make the ANA less transparent and more closed-shop. If they pass, I'm withdrawing my membership.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Like our own House/Senate.....we could use more common folk serving rather than the "professionals." The upper crust is often way out of touch.

Agreed. As useful as they apparently are to those to make use of them, few members probably attend the seminars in Colorado Springs or borrow their books. The hobby needs new blood. If they want to continue to be the de facto representative of the hobby, they should the trailblazing for seriously bringing in legions of YNs. It isn't as simple as the Boy Scouts, which isn;t nearly as popular among kids as it was in the 50s through the early 70s. The hobby is depending on local coin clubs and parents more than those political bozos. The clubs can olny do so much. Parents of many of the kids are in that Gen-X or Gen-Y gap that didn't have the glut of coin collecting youth like us baby boomers. So it isn't something that would naturally occur to many of them. The Mint is doing more for it than the ANA. Also don't see them doing much for the problems of fraud. Yeah, I heard eBay's dog and pony show about how the ANA is helping police the nonsense. Well, I don't see the cops out there. I suspect they did some meetings and wrote a white paper or something. More substance comes from grassroots out of this forum from what I see than from the fat cats out of Colorado. And let's not even start on legal defense issues.

What are some projects that could accomplish this?

I am a proud member of PCGS and NGC but between the frustration I have heard through avenues such as this thread, I see no compelling reasons to join ANA at this time. Good luck on fixing you issues (by the way overspending would be my largest concern). Given the size of you membership (Cash flow), there is absolutely no reason for it.

    Good luck turning things around.
    Best Regards,

    Rob

The ANA is a useless organization that exists solely to feed the egos of the useless BOGs and their minions.

If the ANA were dissolved today it would barely be a flyspeck in time and pass unnoticed.
  • Other than the Bass collection and the library, ANA really has started to Suck wind. Too much political crapola is going on. I haven't had a membership in slmost twenty years cause of the crap.

The summer seminars and two shows are always fantastic. Every coin collector should experience each at least once in their life.
  • Make the elected positions more appealing to members so that more people want to run for an office. I'd have to say, at least at the moment, that the elected officials have a pretty thankless job that requires a lot of work to be done properly. It doesn't seem healthy for the people running for president and vice president to be unopposed.

Let's not be so quick to throw the baby out with the bath water here. The ANA has supported the hobby and both collectors and dealers over the years. They have been a huge support to local clubs, put on two high profile shows a year that put the hobby in the public eye, run excellent summer seminars, maintain an excellent numismatic library, and have put a serious effort in the past in running and developing YN programs, etc.

With that said, the current Executive Director and BOGs have inflicted severe damage to the organization's credibility. Whether the damage has been inflicted by real mismanagement, or perceptions of mismanagement makes no matter. The damage has been done.

I had dinner with Don Kagin on Friday night in Dalton. We had our annual Southern Gold Society gathering at the Cornerstone Grill and Don was kind enough to lead a discussion on Bechler gold. Don is a good guy certainly gives freely his knowledge and experiences to collectors and the hobby. However, as he is a current BOG member he will not get my vote. IMO, the whole group must go to put this organization back on the right track.

Fatman, I agree with you 100%. I also admire your stand with Don Kagin since you obviously know him personally.

  • I just want to know one thing from Don Kagin. Would he have voted yes or no at "THE" meeting that he was unable to attend. If you have kept up with the ANA the past year you'll know what I mean by "THE" meeting.

I've been back active in the hobby since 1999 or so, and joined the ANA at the outset.

I don't mean to be cynical, but I have only the most tenuous of notions about what this organization does for me. I like that they have grading seminars in Colorado each summer (even though my work prevents me from attending them), but that's the only program/activity I've evrr heard of that really interests me, or seems to substantially strengthen the hobby.

I may be uninformed about that, but even that "uninformity" is telling, I think, for a person who has been a paying member and interested in the hobby for several years.

It is correspondingly symptomatic that I am apathetic about who's running for what, and why.
