I think it was reported that they put the ones that were returned to them back on sale after a initial sellout was announced. It is the same thing they did with the 2000 2001 and 2002 proof sets that they sold in a three pack after they had been sold out for a year or more claiming they found more.
<< <i>What many of you might not know or forgotten is what happened to the state quarter FDCs. Both Delaware and Massachusetts sold out and the covers were selling for moon money. Pennsylvania sold out and was moving towards $100 on eBay when the Mint reopened sales of all three. The market collapsed and has never recovered. >>
When they reopened sales, did they just arbitrarily increase the mintage of those sets or were they just staggering the release of these in order to kill the secondary market? >>
I just did an inventory on the US MInt's website and there are 36 State Quarter FDCC's still available for sale, ranging with a mintag of 100,000 for the early years, later years reduced to 75,000. In 2005 the mintage was further reduced to 50,000 & the latest one has a mintage of 35,000. It believe the Mint early on decided not to stop selling these until their supply is exhausted instead of a time frame. This will also be the norm for the Presidential FDCC's .. they will be available for sale until sold out.

Anything having to do with the presedential dollars is selling extremely well ATM. I don't see any reason sales would drop on these since only 50,000 were made. They did a real nice job with them. The coins inside the cover are sealed in air-tight capsules which rotate and are embedded into a black plastic slab that fits inside the envelope with the portrait of GW and the FEB 15th postmark and information about the coins and cover. With all the 'First Strike' controversy the TPGS created I believe the demand will stay strong once the mint dries up.
<< <i>Surprisingly, sales have been very brisk for the presidential first day covers. Anything Presidential $1 coin is selling better than expected and better than quarters. Forecast for GW rolls doubled. Now it's George W. who is incredibly popular so I'm sure that's the major factor driving the numbers, but subscriptions for Proof Presidents are over 250K - huge subscription number. Have to see what Adams does. >>

I can't really tell, but I was very surprised with the quality of the Denvers I got from bank rolls on the first day of release. Compared to some of the others I've seen pulled, mine seemed cream of the crop. The images I've seen (hard to tell for sure) appear to be of lower quality than the ones I pulled from rolls. I don't know why there's contact marks on a coin that didn't spend time in a roll or a bag. Maybe they were minted with contact marks. Maybe they etched contact marks into the dies!

If nothing else - I think NGC is listening. After all, they do have the tape they put on the GSA Morgans. On the other hand CU has the PCGS Currency grading and PSE now so maybe they could see fit to expand into PNC Covers. Might be a good move for them - seeing as how popular the encapsulation field is getting to be.
OK, I'm late to this party...what is the hub-bub all about. I ordered 25 of these covers on the first day...haven't looked here for a while and just read some posts and it reminded me of the platinum frenzy last fall.

<< <i>After all they are officially sanctioned first day of minting coins. No one but the mint can guarantee that!!!! The mint has found a way to discredit all of the First Strike hoopla. Good for them, but more importantly good for collectors!!! >>
I agree. And unless PCGS or their competition offers labels distinguishing these coins as First Day of Mintage instead of just First Day of Issue, I do not see the point in removing them from the sets. (psst, hear that again PCGS?) >>
A unique multi-holder with custom insert would be cool
Yeah and put the freakn' Stamp in it!
50,000 X $10 for Special Holder = $500K x 30% = $150K in potential Revenue + Grading.
No Brainer

If nothing else - I think NGC is listening. After all, they do have the tape they put on the GSA Morgans. On the other hand CU has the PCGS Currency grading and PSE now so maybe they could see fit to expand into PNC Covers. Might be a good move for them - seeing as how popular the encapsulation field is getting to be.

The new guy FLBuffaloHunter, started it.
Same as the Platinum Play, all the usuals suspects, FloridaBill 7over8, Fullstrike and the others,... you know.
I'm in for 400 units (small potatoes comparably), FB and his pal are in for 4,000 Units (8%) of the Mint run.
Others claim 10-15 units to no units, but most likley ordering 50 units at a time.
Looks good.
