its nutz but it really doesn't matter at this point if its a dog or not...when you can buy the items, hang onto them for 30 days, then decide to keep or return...there is no real risk. Its just a matter of tying up a little money for a month or so.

Sure you can order 500 coin covers and sit on them for a month. But they are still overpriced for the cover and certification fees. If you were sleeping during the true first day issue, I guess the covers are worth a shot. I'll wait for the BU Eagles instead.

Unless you plan on keeping these 8 years I do not see an up side... >>
There may not be an "upside" to having 2000 of them, but if these sell out soon, you can say "sold out at the mint" and increase interest and sales. Maybe not a windfall, but I doubt they'll be hardcore "dogs". At the very least, the P & D sets sell raw without the packaging for about $5. And I assume collectors don't care if there's an upside or not. Keep them to for the washington sets, or give them away as gifts. That's why I bought them. I think comparing quarter covers to these dollar covers is like apples and oranges. Think about it for a second--if someone asked "is buying commemorative silver dollars a good investment?" you'd say no, because most of them sell for cost or less. But then you have the buffalo that's on fire, so even in historical "dog" issues there are gems. The '99 silver proof sets sell for 20 times what a '64 proof is bringing... and in general proof sets are "dogs". I think there are variables here, with the Washington dollars, that aren't present in other first day covers, that may or may not affect the price and collectibility of them.
Most of the ones selling for below issue price are still available at the mint, and they have higher mintage limits than the 2007 George Washington $1 Coin Cover. The 2007 George Washington $1 Coin Cover has a lower mintage and national appeal, unlike a lot of the state quarters. I suspect that it will be much more sought after than the Delaware State Quarter Coin Cover.
these are capable of going up. remember the ocean in view sets were actively trading at a hundred bucks a set. the mint pulled the rug out from under that when they issued more, but still it evidenced that cover sets can be worth something to collectors.

I think the bigest appeal these presedential coin covers offer is the potential of finding better FDI examples than the crap from bank rolls everyone got stuck sending in when they were released. These should prove to offer nicer examples which would definitely pay off in terms of higher grades. Also many were left with only a partial P or D FDI set due to the geographical Federal bank distribution.

What's funny is the mint didn't really advertise these until they came out. I just happened to see them when I went to check on upcoming products about two weeks before they came out. They showed up on the product schedule just prior to launch.

Our first order of the GW FDC's will be here in about an hour or so, they are on the Fed-ex truck for delivery. I will peel open a few of the sets to check quality.
The discussions generated on this thread, are informative and educational for all.
It reminds me of the discussion on the 20th Ann. SAE set last year, at first I passed on it! (ordered the 2006 W Unc. instead). After considering all the inputs, I did order a set and I'm glad I did!
New guy question. What grade would you put on that coin that you posted? I see lots of scratches and would have thought a new coin would have less, but like I said, New guy. I just got my 1st coin which was a graded PF69 so not a good reference as I can't see anything wrong with it. I ordered 2 sets of these that are on back order since I'm such a high roller. ^_^
Definately at lot better looking than the junk that I looked at from the Bank Rolls...I searched through 8 rolls & could not find one decent one.......

Sets are in hand. We just opened the first shipping box from the Mint. Looks like the mint boxed up these in 50 set cases and numbered them up to 1000. We received box #9 of 1000 along with the balance of this order in loose sets. We'll get to the other boxes a bit later. Off to check quality

You can't compare apples to oranges. The coin that you just got graded MS69 was probably a coin not meant for circulation. Very difficult to obtain an MS69 grade on a circulated coin. As a matter of fact, so far the highest grade obtain by the G.W. (PCGS) is MS67 with a total population of less than 20.

Thanks. I was just curious since I'm new. I know you can't compare the 2, but I only have the one as a reference and this pic so I'll check out the link and slowly learn.
I placed a few orders on Saturday and a few more orders this morning around 9am. The mint is definitly selling something as the order numbers have increased by 10,500 in that period.
to me, the 2 coins in the cover pictured are not anything great as far as quality...definitely not even ms66 with the srcatches. If you guys find a good one, post it up

I believe, from the quality I've seen, it's gonna be very tough to get anything above a 66.

I just spoke with bulk again. As long as they are submitted sealed in the clear plastic wrapper they are eligible for the FDI insert.-
We will honor the First Day of Issue, but the submission has to meet the following criteria…
Through Bulk
Minimum 100 coins
No minimum grade
Flat rate of $12/coin
The packages they come in (see example below) are sealed, so we do not require that they send the external shipping box. (Customers do need to leave the cover in-tact—if they remove the coins, we will not honor the First Day of Issue.) They will *not* get the post-marked cover back.
If a customer has further questions, please transfer them to Bulk.

I just placed an order for 10 sets. The delivery day is 4-23-07. I placed an order for 1 set last wednesday and that delivery date is 4-24-07 Go figure!!!
So what is the difference in these once graded and those FDI's listed on ebay right now? Will they be the same once you grade them as faras packaging? If so that's silly.

Yup, anything ordered on 4/5 or later, it appears that the delivery date has been moved back to 4/24. I'm sure that date will be moved back even further for the most recent orders.

My order for the single set was placed about 2pm on 4/4, the first day they were released. Originally the mint said it would be shipped on 4/5,
It would be very interesting to know what percentage of the 50,000 sets will be sold to board members. I suspect it will be a high percentage.
If this is true, and if there is a quick sellout, it will be interesting to see what happens to these covers on the aftermarket I assume these could go sky high very quickly.
<< <i>I ordered as soon as they started selling...broke my order up into 25, 25,25,10,15 All the 25's arrived today...the 10 and 15 have not shipped >>
What is the reasoning behind splitting up your order of 100 sets? I assume there is some advantage or you want to pay all that extra shipping.

My guess...about 20%

Yup...it's gonna be difficult in getting a MS67 .. I believe the MS 67+ will come from the Satin Finish Mint Sets...But that will be all together another coin.

Hoping for that no edge lettering Dollar!!!!!!!!
They come in a sealed white envelope. I'll post more pics later.
I can hear all of the buy 'clicks' from the board now!
Who will be the first to find a plain-edge?
Who will be the first to beat the MS67?
Who will be the last to order before a total sell-out?
I just put in my 4th order at 9:26 AM.
That's enough for now.
