1878-s trade dollar

Hello, new here, just getting started in coin collecting. I see that there are a lot of knowledgeable people on the boards and every one seems very nice. I purchased this trade dollar before I knew about all the fakes. What do you think? What grade if it’s authentic?

Thanks

I don't know enough about them to say. Where did you buy it?

I am no expert on the series.. but looking at the coin and some pictures, it seems authentic. Maybe cleaned or dipped. Cheers, RickO

Weigh it then you'll probably know the answer.

But if I had to guess, it looks real.
  • a nice solid AU, no problems. 100% genuine. Nice coin

Welcome to the forum Ominus. From the pictures it looks authentic but weigh it if you have a coin scale. It should weigh about 27.22 grams.

    "nice solid AU, no problems"??

  • If you are new to coin collecting and are collecting trade dollars, you may want to stick to PCGS and NGC holders for a while.
  • Wow, thanks for all the replies. It looks like I got a decent deal, I won it on ebay. It doesn’t bother me so much that it may have been dipped (no scratches so I don’t think it was rubbed). I like the design and the coin that’s why I bid on it. I don’t have a scale but will be purchasing one. I also want to get in to photography as using a scanner doesn’t do the coins justice.
    Once again thanks

    Welcome to the boards Ominus!!

Looks real IMO, probably dipped ... but scans almost always give coins that flat, lifeless look ... it could be nicer than shown, or could have a few hidden issues that scans don't seem to pick up on well ...

I'm going to guess in hand it's an authentic Choice AU
