I just wanted to say a newbee hello to everyone. I've been collecting coins for for about 30 years but have just sent my first order to PCGS.
I have a question for those more experienced then me... Two coins are coming back ungraded. One is a 1787 Massachusetts 1/2 cent VF30 Bn purchased in about 1979 from Bowers and Ruddy. The PCGS description is damage/tooling BN. I'm pretty sure it is neither damaged nor retooled. The other coin is a Cameo PL fully toned 1893 Columbian Exposition Half. It's coming back as cleaned. I can't see why as there are no signs of wear or hairlines evident at up to 16x magnification. I thought it might get a MS66 or better PL. Any ideas as to what I could or should do??
Many thanks,
Barry Lehr

Welcome
Take it from some of the others..........resubmit, and then resubmit again 'till it slabs.
Sad to say, but some good coins get BB'd every now and again.

Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
It is possible that the coins would holder in a subsequent submission, but it is equally likely that there are real issues that you are missing.
I would also add, based on my experience, that having purchased a coin from Bowers and Ruddy in the 1970s (or any other reputable dealer at anytime in the past) doesn't guarantee that the coins will be graded similarly or higher by the TPGs today.

If the grade don't fit, you must resubmit.

They're usually right but no one is perfect.
can you show us pictures of the coins, taken in bright light?
And Welcome!

Also, try looking at your coins in a dark room under an incandescent or halogen lamp. It's amazing what you can learn given proper lighting.

BTW, I like your forum name. I've been practicing the Turkish Rondo part of the Sonata in A Major. I think Mr. Spock would say it's "Quite Challenging".
Have fun collecting coins! I know it's not logical but hope you do.

BTW...this may not be a popular suggestion here in PCGS CU land...buuuttt...if it is decided that your coins just won't be able to make it into a PCGS holder, you could try NGC. One of their graders once told me that they will grade & encapsulate "any coin they feel has a marketable appearance"...more borderline coins get into their holders than at PCGS. Also...there is ANACS...they will authenticate your coins and put them in holders with a details grade and a note of the "problem" (at least they give you full service for your fee...no body bags except for counterfeits).

Yep, and it was "ahh, Bach...", but it works anyway.

Just enjoy them raw. That's a great option if you aren't trying to sell them.
