    66 luster (from pix) and 65 marks . . . I would feel comfy at 65.

But . . . I'd feel REAL comfy with that Peace anytime . . . . eye appeal is superb.

I guessed 64 due to the cut on the
cheek and the bag marks on the neck,
but it could go 65. I like the strike and
    the luster!!

    Nice looking dollar!!

Killer luster, common date, 64 marks. MS-64, but nice to look at.

I think 65. Great strike but the marks on the face and neck will keep it away from a 66.

Hits on the neck could limit it to 64, but the great strike and killer luster could easily get it to 65.
  • Put me down for the 64 bunch

A few hits but enough luster to justify a 65 IMO.

Luster might get it to 66. Otherwise 65

  • 64 technical due to the bite marks on the neck and cheek, with superb lustre that makes it PQ. 65 or 66 market (depending when it was submitted.)

Super nice peace $$. One of my favorite series. I'd judge that one a 66 strike, 67 luster, but IMHO the marks would keep it at a 65. Super detail in the hair, and nice sharp blocked lettering. Excellent feather detail onn the reverse, and like most, the reverse is a nice 66. Beautiful coin.image

Too many marks for 65, but very nice luster and strike.
  • solid 65

    great strike.

    62/63.

Liberty's neck is somewhat hacked up, and PCGS seems to have a lower tolerance for marks on Peace Dollars vs. Morgans.

Hmmm...really nice strike on this and great luster...but 'cause of the prominent marks on the neck and jawbone plus the number of smaller marks I will guess that it is a 64. Really nice strike though..one of the better ones I have seen!

If luster is as nice as it appears in the photo, I'd think 65. Bag marks are borderline, but superior original luster would win out.

63 MAX! Are we the only ones that noticed the Grand Canyon has been relocated to Liberty's cheek? In addition to a dozen other large hits on the cheek and neck......
  • roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,313 ✭✭✭✭✭
MS64. Too much action on the cheek and neck. The eagle's feathers has one good scuffed area as well as a hit. Could also see this a grade lower, but not higher. As a $60 to $90 in MS63 to 64, there's not a huge spread. I just sold a PCGS MS66 of this date that was very clean, but did not have the luster of this piece.

I love this place for honest opinions.

I would agree that this is a high end 64.
I know there are no decimals in the Sheldon Scale, per se., but... 64.8 is about where I'd put this one, too.
The hit on the cheek and neck along with the gouge in the field between the rays on the reverse hurt the coin more than they help it, but it does have good eye appeal overall.
  • HighReliefHighRelief Posts: 3,720 ✭✭✭✭✭
Excellent strike with nice luster Stuart on your 1926 Peace Dollar. I would say it would grade out MS64, due to the chatter on the neck area and a few hits on the obverse and reverse.

One thing to make note of with anyone who doesn't really know Peace dollars is that this coin has about as much feather detail as one will EVER see on a Peace Dollar. It is the same with the Hair on Liberty on the obverse. I failed to mention the STRIKE DETAIL of this coin in my first post.

Thanks for the lively comments keeping this thread active and vibrant! image

I do have a couple of additional observations to add about this coin's luster. In my opinion, this coin does not show any evidence of having been previously dipped, based upon what I feel is a totally original skin.

The best way that I can describe the mint luster is to say that the surface of the coin almost has a wet look to it with amazingly fluid cartwheel effect mint luster. When compared to some other similarly graded (and higher graded) Peace Dollars, this one totally blew the others away from a mint luster perspective.

I happen to really appreciate strong mint luster on specific coin series such as Peace Dollars, as well as $20 Gold Saint Gaudens & Liberty Double Eagles.

Not all coins have to be either rare or expensive to be beautiful and fun to appreciate. image

No higher than a 64 due to the obverse marks in prime focal areas...

Beautifully struck, great luster without milky spots, but dracula got her on the neck- several times. I'm going to guess it's a borderline 63/64 coin sitting in a PCGS 63 holder.

64 obverse because of the hits on the focal points, 66 reverse, hammered strike. I say it's a high end MS64. Really nice Peace dollar!

Thanks to those who voted their grade, and thanks also to those who took the extra time to post their comments and observations about this coin.

With 82 votes cast following are the results that I feel are an accurate reflection of the grade for this coin, which I believe to be a high-end MS-64 with Gem eye appeal.

80% voted for either MS-64 (45%) or MS-65 (35%). As usual, the forum members do a very credible job of guessing the grade, under the difficult circumstances of grading from a digital image.

    MS-67 or Higher :-) 0 (votes) 0.00 (%)
    MS-66 4 (votes) 4.88 (%)
    MS-65 29 (votes) 35.37 (%)
    MS-64 37 (votes) 45.12 (%)
    MS-63 8 (votes) 9.76 (%)
    MS-62 3 (votes) 3.66 (%)
    MS-61 or Lower (And I Need Glasses!!) 1 (vote) 1.22 (%)
