Nice Type Coin Added Today........

I had to do a little work in town about 50 miles away and stopped into a coin shop to see if I could find something for the type set. I've been looking for a decent mid-grade example of this series for awhile and when I saw this one, I just couldn't resist. I've looked at a fair number of these and I've had a hard time finding a nice original piece that hadn't been workedcleaned or had other distacting marks. I think I found one with just nice honest wear. I probably overpaid a little, but it was worth the little extra for what I think is a nice coin. Anyone care to offer an oppinion as to grade?

<< <i>That's a fantastic looking coin... exactly what they all should look like! Unless you paid many grades up, I doubt you could really overpay for something this original amidst so much junk. >>
I paid 200 for it. I just didn't want to squable over 20 or 30 bucks and then have to wait for another nice example to come along.

291Fifth, I've said it before and I'll say it again (and don't get me wrong, I enjoy your comments nearly always) -- start selling me seated coinage. The way you grade, I'll take all you've got.
Nice original "double-dime".
For comparison, here's her sister which I paid XF money for:
<< <i>I don't think there is anything wrong with $200 for that coin. I would call it XF, and nice!

I actually graded it while looking at the ANA Grading Guide, 6th edition. It seems to be a textbook VF30. The $200 paid for it seems to be right on the market. It is a nice coin.
<< <i>I agree - XF.

Sorry, but it isn't XF and I don't like the surfaces. If you paid XF money, you overpaid. It is a coin I would have passed on.

I'd say 45 and at $200 you did just fine--don't forget that the Liberty on these coins is not incuse--it's raised and goes quickly--nice 20 center!

<< <i>beautiful wear pattern for an xf, rather excellent mind you! but I am curious as to whether it is originally skinned. the toning has a painted-on type of look that may have come from an old cleaning/retoning and doesn't have that crusty, full original skin. there is an absence of dirt and the brightness in the right side field doesn't match the darkness of the rest of the coin which reinforces my assumption... >>
I think it's the camera causing it, in person the coin looks very orginal.

That is the widest unprotected field area on the coin. They are often, I'll even say usually, like that.
291 -- In a VF30 you'd have a weaker LIBERTY and weaker breast feathers. Remember that in addition to wear, these things are not always struck all that great either. That coin just doesn't have the wear for VF. Look how rounded the thighs still are ...
I agree that the second coin has funky surfaces. I do not like it near as much (sorry, but that one does look cleaned & retoned, and I also don't care for all the business on the rims).
