Are they doing girlfriends or mistresses for the unmarried (or even married-just think how many JFK coins there would be, or splitting mintages between Hillary and Monica) presidents?

I got a roll of GW coins at the bank, but it's for spending, not collecting. The coins come in handy for drink tips at the casino and roasted peanut bags from street vendors in NYC.

I think, in conjunction with all the various issues including commems, this will be one of the nails on the Mint's over zealous coffin. Another "commem bust" is coming, I think, and I think these will be part of it.
They are really stretching to find something to sell in every sort of section of the market and, while on the surface that may sound good, I think it will be more detrimental than anything.

Are there any numismatists that work at the USMint? Any in decision making capacity? If not, then that explains things.

numismatists working in Congress would have a bigger effect. The US Mint is just the "whipping boy" of Congress.

I'm not buying any first ladies.

Most of the first ladies weren't known for anything except the fact that they were married to U.S. president. A few first ladies in recent years have had agendas:

Barbara Bush >> illiteracy
Betty Ford >> addiction treatment

Never figured out what Hillary was all about and forgot what Nancy Reagan did.

Why buy Jackie Kennedy-Onassis? She gave up her US citizenship to marry money.

Edit to add: No I won't be buying. If the mintage for Mrs. Fillmore's coin is only 500, who cares?

I understand the mint did not make the decision, however, one would hope that if there were a numismatist in the house, they could try to talk to the congressional morons who did make the decisions.
They also would be able to influence the designs a bit as well, I do believe.

There is a lot of power in positioning, even to people who have no inherent power.

I saw a documentary on History Channel about 2nd President, John Adams a week ago. In his campaign against Thomas Jefferson for re-election, I learned about the first election that was negative and downright nasty. Thomas Jefferson paid newspaper publishers to write outright lies about John Adams. He was so nasty in his campaign, I lost alot of respect for Thomas Jefferson. He was a typical, "slick willy" politician. So I'm not even interested in TJ liberty gold.

Really? Who? The only way the current Senator will get on it is if hubby kicks the bucket within about the next seven years. Probably not likely unless he's shot by a jealous husband. And the husband would have to get past the Secret Service. (Unless of course the jealous husband is part of his SS detail. Of course I think even Bill would have more sense than to fool around with the wife or daughter of someone who is around him daily with loaded weapons. )

Tiny mintages and still priced at Gold scrap 26 years later....

Even if I had the discretionary income to do a whole series in gold right now, I would still pass. I just think the entire concept sucks- I think there are thousands of americans who have contributed greatly to culture, science, peace, and humanitarianism that would make better subjects for coinage than women who happened to be political spouses...
