Buffernick fans: Would you gamble $550 on this coin?

My opinion: Yes, it's worth taking a chance on. The seller has excellent feedback and a full a return policy.

Looks like a nice strike, but very dull luster. Are all 13-S T2s this lacking in luster?

No, I have one in MS64 that is fairly bright. Lange says the better the strike, the duller the luster.
I'll mark you down as a "no." image

With your handle on Buffs and a good return policy----Oh Yeaimage
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Definitely not UNC. Looks like it has a "thick skin" but it sure does look like wear on the cheekbone and hair behind the forehead, and the wear on the upper rear hindquarter. Is that corrosion on the front of the buff's noggin?

With a full return privilege, why not?

How about a good pic with your camera now. image

I'll mark you down as a "no." Bodybag, damage/corrosion.
When the coin arrives, I'll certainly give that area very close look.
Btw, I agree on the little luster break on the hindquarters. It very possibly is AU. But the high hip bone is quite sharp, and most AU58 examples have more noticeable flatness there.

    I don't care for it.

I don't like the crud on the bison's head, the scratch that runs down his front leg/chest and the scratch on his left rear leg.

It's also extremely dull and lifeless.

Doesn't look like one that would belong in your stash.

Goose, I'll mark you down as a no on "general principles." image

By way of comparison, this 13-S T2 is in an NGC MS64 holder.

  • I like it!

The mint mark looks right, dull luster but that could be the photos. The area by the forehead and in front of the left hindleg looks
    like pvc.

With the refund policy i would go after it, not much to lose. image

Ain't ebay grand? Tire kicking and ....what's that word? When you buy something to see if it floats your boat but you keep the return policy in mind?

  • I would say that you would get a lot of detail for the money on that coin for sure, but if you were looking to get it slabbed, it would be a gamble. The two scratches on the reverse are what would concern me for slabbing. The crud in front of the buffalo's head doesn't look all that serious, possibly removable. However with a coin of this color, you might leave behind a nice shiny spot that sticks out worse- you can't tell until it is in hand really. As for the toning break on the hip- I don't think it is wear at all. If it were wear, there would usually be a corresponding toning break on the bottom part of the hip as well, which is obviously not there. And the hip still retains its nice round shape, which also points to no wear. I like the coin a lot, and I think the positives outweigh the negatives, but perhaps best suited to an album instead of TPG plastic.

Yes, it's grand. So are Heritage, Teletrade and any other source with a return privilege. I couldn't imagine purchasing a coin this way without an opportunity to examine it after you get it in hand--could you?

It looks like there is solder between the buffalo's head and the rim. I'm not say there is, it just looks that way in the picture.

Don't they charge for returns? Still sounds like an approval service to me.
As for what I do....yes, a return is important, but I don't go into it "taking a chance" and basing it all on a "full return policy".
I try to get better/extra pics, etc.

To each their, though, right Guy?

I believe buying any coin physical sight unseen is taking a chance. In most cases it is a gamble to the extent that one will be out shipping/insurance if they dislike the coin.
Now, you state a return privilege is merely "important" to you. By important, do you really mean "absolutely necessary"? In that case the difference really is semantical. I'm very comfortable with having a return policy at the forefront of the purchases I make on eBay.

I'd venture to say that most 13-S in this price range in the various archives have greater problems than this one, so in that regard, I would say go for it. For me, if I owned that coin in 64, I wouldn't muck with spending another $550, but those are simply my collecting goals.

The mintmark does look right. It is, of course the same mintmark found on 1909-S VDB.

Short, squat, with a little imperfection inside the top loop.

Did you check the rim, Guy? Don't forget this issue is rife for alterations.

The color does not bother me. It is a good strike very good specimen for this very scarce to rare date.

I do believe it has rub. AU-55 to AU-58 rub. The color shift is evident on Iron Tail's chin.

With a guarantee..............I would buy it.

It concerns me in general. Otherwise, I like the coin.
