Wasting time on the Forum finally pays off!

Was walking into Kroger and saw the Coinstar machine. Looked around to see if anybody was watching. Reached into the the rejected coins bin and pulled out 4 quarters and 4 cents. Woohoo - creating wealth through knowledge!!

I never find any money in the Coinstar at my local grocery store. Too much competition from the people that live in my neighborhood.

In your neighborhood, I'm surprised that the last time the Coinstar machine was seen by anyone, it was wrapped around with chains being pulled down the road at 60mph behind a pickup

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh that's nothing! Back in the day, 5 years ago,
when they still had coins in Atlantic City, I used to walk the casino floor to see what was in the hoppers left from the blind ol ladies. Better yet, I used to buy Kennedy half dollar rolls down there for no reason, but to search for 40 & 90 %.

    You're a rookie! image

joking, but the top part is true.

I do the same thing surreptitiously --never find anything. Reminds me of when I was growing up in Washington D.C. in the 1950's ( I was an 8th grader in 1955). We would skip school and go downtown to Union Station and hit the phone booths ( the old station had like like 30 or 40 booths in a row--well before the days of the cell phone). The coin return slots always yielded several dollars in change. I guess a lot of businessmen would forget to check the coin returns) We would have a great day with the money we found--hang out at the Smithsonian--go to the Medical museum and get grossed out--sure wish I had of kept my findings instead of buying hamburgers and cigarettes--alas, a misspent youth--but great memories).

None of my neighbors own working vehicles.

man, that reminds me when i was about five and we were waiting in an airport and my younger brother and i did the same thing, went down the row of pay phones and came back to my mother with fistfuls of change. She blew a gasket and summoned a security guard and made us hand it over.

Yeah, guys it's tough these days what with credit cards and cellphones and machines taking dollar bills, heck we have to blow an ATM right off the side of a bank just to make a living.imageimage

Lesson to be learned--never let your Mom know when you're robbing the pay phones!--needless to say my Mom didn't know I was ditching school to go downtown--or at least not till later. Then she would tell my Dad and all hell would break loose. Still--a lot of fun and I survived. Coinstar will never compare!

Back in the mid-70s while I was working at Coin World, I got caught in a hail storm one day so I pulled into a defunct self-serve car wash to keep my car from being dented. As I was standing next to the car waiting for the rain to stop, I glanced at the metal frame where the coin mechanism had been removed and noticed a dime through a hole in the bottom of the frame (yes, they took dimes back then). I fished it out, and found another, and another, and eventually found over 20 dimes in that frame. That and the other frames in the building gave me a total of 88 dimes.

I don't think owning the vehicle would be a requirement for your neighbors. image

It has paid off one time going to the corner Coca-Cola vending machine. About 25 years ago, this particular one was the one people liked to vandalize by means of the coin mechanism. I put I think a quarter and it got stuck. I kept tring use the coin release to no avail so I started hitting it really hard. Before long I heard " clunck clunck clunck " as it chucked out nickles, dimes, and quarters as well as cans of Coca-Cola. I wound up with 6 cans of Coca-Cola and about $3 worth of change on a single quarter. It happened often and that was my best haul. image

Why would anyone be dumb enough to pay someone 10% to count their change? Just quit savin it.
