An "affordable" Gobrecht.

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Of course, affordable is a relative term. Not affordable for me, but less expensive than a higher graded example would be.

PCGS PR45. Enjoy!

Edit: OOPS! Linked the wrong coin the first time.

Not necessarily. A lot of AU-58s are more expensive than MS-60s despite the latter being graded "higher" (at least numerically). image

I saw one in a PCGS VF20 slab in 1998 that was quite a bit less than this one. image

While at heart, Russ is quite the capitalist and entrepeaneur... he is still a collector, and he keeps some of the best stuff that he cherrypicks, as does Marty. Both of them are very proud of their collections. Both of them relied on their own skills and knowledge to locate 99% of the coins in their collections. Neither of them have relied on a dealer to hand feed them "specially picked" coins...

Lowest grade I've seen in a PCGS slab is a PR6......danged low grade for a coin like this.

Funny thing is, I suspect that would be bid up rather highly in auction.

Russ is fibbing, it's a PR45 that he sold on eBay for 14k. I happened to run accross it about 15 minutes ago.

Huh? What would I be fibbing about? BTW, it sold for $14,677.13 to be precise.

There is a one sided Gobrecht Dollar out there somewhere.
Someone sanded off the reverse, probably to make a love token out of.
Jonathon Kern had it in his inventory, maybe 15 years or so ago.
Seems like he wanted around $2500 for it.

One of the many Heritage sales recently had an ANACS PR4 listed (and history on 4 others over the years). Used and much abused. Sales had ranged from $2400-3100 including the juice. The seller's reserve ......................$7000 plus the juice! Back into his pocket I guess.

I believe the obverse of the Gobrecht is my all time favorite design. I've often wondered why the mint did not make a half-dollar with the same design? They made the dollar, dime and half-dime, but no half-dollar. Anybody know why?

Here is my PCGS PF10. I bought the piece a few years ago for substantially less than the current selling price of the 2006-W MS platinum four-coin set. I doubt you could find more than a handfull that are problem-free and attractive in this grade range and I would expect you would have to pay more, perhaps substantially more, today for them. By the way, could someone please PM goose3 to tell him to have a look at this thread?image
