The buyer of that coin is probably going to want to "fill that hole" pretty bad! image

Is this 1877 Indian cent a "shot 65" as they call it? image

This is at least the second time it's been up for sale. A few weeks ago it got up to $650 and didn't meet the reserve, apparently.image

Wow. I would love to have it for the Holey Coin Vest.

It's cool to me, but not $500+ cool. Not by a longshot.

    Oh man, what a shame!

    Sold for $220. Pretty reasonable.

For $220, I would've been tempted... almost. But not quite.

(Edit... I probably would've been a bidder up to... oh, maybe a little over $150. Say... $165.)

I guess I still remember too vividly selling a decent G-VG unholed example that had a little counting wheel damage across the headband... for 85 bucks. Of course that was more than 12 years ago.

Someone reserved this at $650? Good grief. You can get a nice, problem-free G-4 for that price.

$220 I can see. It's a pretty nice coin save for the hole, and perhaps most importantly, the date is very clear -- making this a cheap filler.

Going back to that "if you had a time machine" thread, I'd like to go back in time to when someone was using this coin for target practice and convince them to use a more common date -- an 1865, maybe.

atleast you can see the diagnostic element on the reverse to see its the real deal.

$200 is still a lot of money for something like that. I can remember years ago a fellow found a '77 Indian on the beach. It was corroded green and not quite round, but the date was clear and enough was left to call genuine without a doubt. He couldn’t get a dealer to pay him $20 for it.

That's good. And you can see the date clearly. And you can see weakness in the denticles on the obverse from about 10:00 to 1:00 (even if somewhat skewed by the damage). These are all common elements of an authentic 1877 cent. Even if this one were raw, I'd have confidence in its likely authenticity.

"$200 is still a lot of money for something like that."

Indeed it is. I could not abide a coin like this in my Indian cent cabinet. It's a shame but this holed '77 has been relegated to curio status and is practically worthless as a truly collectible coin. Price? 20 bucks to the curio collector would be reasonable IMO.
