I think people are a little more willing to pay "stupid money" for Battle Creeks because they feel a little more confident that these coins haven't been MOCked.
Any time you can get 20x sheet value for a coin because of the toning, it had better be pretty eye-popping...
It's probably just the reserve inching up. It will be at the full reserve in 1-1.5 hours. It is nice but not THAT nice. Good bag/textile toning. Bet it doesn't sell.

Just for interests sake, I've never heard of a creeping reserve before. Normally a company will either put up the reserve or not. Does Teletrade have a creeping reserve?

While I would not spend that sort of money on that specific toner, I definitely believe there were BC coins that were easily worth that amount of money.
Let's face it, once you pay significantly more than the bullion value of a silver dollar (e.g. just paying MS65 money) you are making a value judgement about the coin.

Worth that, and more, all day long. If I didn't already have mine, I'd be circling that monster. First of all, a monster toned Morgan is a thing of beauty. Now filter in the fact that it's a Battle Creek, and you've got one very special treasure. The new owner will be thrilled with that coin and his/her chest will just simply...

Yes. They raise it over time even if there is no bidding until about 3pm PST, where it is at the reserve. If you bid coins there in the last few hours, rest assured you are not bidding against a seller's reserve. Any counter bids are real bids. Taken as what it is, it really isn't hard to responsibly handle their offerings.

Dizzy: Your comments regarding Battle Creek Dollars sound just like those you used to make regarding monster toned classic commems. Now you think the toning premium for them is absurd but the toning premium for the BC Dollars is "Worth that, and more, all day long. " Somehow I don't follow your logic.

My thoughts have changed regarding classic commems, they have not changed regarding Battle Creek Morgans... and I even have more classic commems than BC Morgans. I don't despise classic commems but I won't go after the heavy toners either. I just have come to the realization that they are over-hyped IMO. I still think they're pretty, but I won't be adding to my collection.

Interesting...I would take the opposite side of that argument, but what do I know? I am the fool who was concerned that some of the Battle Creek coins might be AT...before I was reprogrammed. To me, a beautifully toned commem is far more desirable than another toned Morgan.
Now that the auction is closed here's a little FYI guys and gals...
The coin in question was in the BC 2 auction (September, 2005) and was lot number 1230. In that auction with the juice it went for $5,463. That made it the 10th most expensive of ALL the BC coins in the 4 main BC auctions. I had to go to a school function tonight so I didn't see what the coin ended at in the Teletrade auction (last I saw it was at $4,600 plus the juice or $5,152 total), but from the, "Realized price pending" and given I can find other coins prices realized I would say that it didn't make it's reserve
I saw the coin in hand before the BC 2 auction and thought it was definitely a gorgeous coin... but not worth over $5,000 to me. From what I remember, I gave up bidding on it somewhere in the two thousands.
I saw that COMMON DATE COIN, last night and look upon it with awe. Awe that it would be bid so high. Did it sell? I remember an attractive avatar telling me that I was wrong in my assessment of color coins bringing so much money. When I first got really serious about coins (many moons ago) I was taught not to buy the SIZZLE and I stick by my assessment and now I go a step further in my opinion this is worse than MODERN CRAP collecting. Don't pay ridiculous premiums for common coins in un common condition, regardless of how long they "haven't seen the light of day".
Disclaimer: The above represents and opinion by Michael who on many occasions has puchased classic rare coins that at present he cannot afford to replace and has engaged in the purchase of MODERN CRAP along with other fine collectors.

Yeah, they're pretty, but dang.
Like they say, A Fool and a bunch of his $$$ is soon parted, only to wind up with a tarnished 87 morgan $.
