The entire coin market since 1986 has been a dream sequence on "Dallas." The major TPG's never really existed.

I don't know, but I am interested in hearing what it is. I guessed that it has something to do with lasering.

Sure sounds like it could be some dealer shill bidding just under the reserve price at the auction to me....Hummm, I hope this isn't it.

Hardly. He said "new" way. Shill bidding has been around since the invention of the auction format.

I don't like the way sellers say there's no return on PCGS or NGC certified coins but they do advise you to take it up with them and their guarantees if you don't like the coin. But that may be old fashion news as well.

Maybe it has something to do with collectors submitting coins through PCGS dealers or a new way that coins or slabs are being altered. image

I don't know what it involves, but I heard that there is a new method to enhance coins, much better than lasers.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

True you’re probably right. The bleeding edge of the internet is only about 10 years old and non-existent on the last coin Bull Run so I guess you could consider it a new way. Of course us fortune 500 IT types have been around it since the early 80’s.

Its something sleazy that only a few dealers are doing to get to collectors. So the dealers aren't doing it to eachother, more toward collectors. I guess we are going to find out which dealers are involved, doing this dastardly deed must have been spread by word of mouth from dealer to dealer but must have been kept fairly quiet until they were discovered recently. Thats my take on this-------------------------BigE

This would be a timely spot for a joke but so far I've managed to not get bammed so I guess I'll try and keep it that way.

I'm thinking its one of two things....

    1. Lasering of proof gold coins

    2. The "selling" and "holding for security/resale" of the same coin to multiple buyers. Just a SWAG

Dealers who quote very out of date population reports to give the false sense of rarity-

PCGS will make population reports available for free!

    (1) Reminting of classic rarities occurs using original mint state other date coins to make convincing planchets and virtually undetectable and painstakingly created counterfeit dies.

    (2) Government regulation steps in to remedy problems, real or perceived, in the coin industry and are established by people altogether unfamiliar with the coin hobby.

    (3) Rumors that plastic slabs have been shown to harbor bacteria and viruses. (Remember the incude Indian gold rumors?)

    (4) Rashes of murderous home invasion robberies begin to specifically target collectors and dealers, particularly those identified through registries and online forums.

    (5) Documentation requirements stiffened, making taxation cost basis for coins without very specific sale documentation to be the face value of the coin.

    (6) The IRS and state tax agencies crack down, lot by lot, on both buyers and sellers for the past several years of records at Heritage, Stacks/ANR, Superior, Teletrade, ...

Maybe it's the "switch the coin" game. Customer gives coin to dealer to submit. Dealer submits a lower grade coin and keeps the good one. If discovered he just says pcgs screwed it up. Not exactly a major bomb though.

It will be announced that Cameron Kiefer is actually the illegitimate son of Laura Sperber and David Hall
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Nope here it is breaking news.

Kenmore (Sears private label) has just come out with a new oven, with a specialized coin baking attachment. It is just a lil below self cleaning temp, but specially devised to alter coins to a beautiful patina.

As I posted in HRH's thread: PeeCee will likely establish a system of grading problem coins IMHO in an effort to squash the proliferation of bogus graded coins in gypsy TPG companies holders. I see it as the most effective way to circumvent the tide of coins flowing to those shmucks, that have the potential to create a crash in the market of coins purchased in gypsy holders by the unwashed masses.image

Well I don't think if it was really negative news HRH wouldn't have sounded excited about a bomb shell. If it was really negative news you would have had a small little press release that would go unnoticed for a while. I am hesitant to guess but I would say it's good news like:

    A new product or holder?
A new form of AT detection?
    Purchase of a major competitor?
    etc.

Bear, you are correct. It is along these lines. Listen: David Hall would NOT make a "major" announcement involving dealers screwing collectors, and leave it at that.
Whatever the problem is, Hall will announce that PCGS has a solution. And the solution will absolutely, 100%, dead-for-sure be one that generates revenue for PCGS. That's why there's a big drum roll beforehand--to generate attention and interest on something that will channel money to PCGS. I'm not implying at all that there's something wrong with that. It's just good marketing and smart business, and if it helps collectors along the way, so much the better.
    You're a wise old Bear.
