Hardly. He said "new" way. Shill bidding has been around since the invention of the auction format.

True you’re probably right. The bleeding edge of the internet is only about 10 years old and non-existent on the last coin Bull Run so I guess you could consider it a new way. Of course us fortune 500 IT types have been around it since the early 80’s.
I'm thinking its one of two things....
1. Lasering of proof gold coins
2. The "selling" and "holding for security/resale" of the same coin to multiple buyers. Just a SWAG
any tampering, by use of gas thru the sonic seals.

Dealers who quote very out of date population reports to give the false sense of rarity-

(2) Government regulation steps in to remedy problems, real or perceived, in the coin industry and are established by people altogether unfamiliar with the coin hobby.
(3) Rumors that plastic slabs have been shown to harbor bacteria and viruses. (Remember the incude Indian gold rumors?)
(4) Rashes of murderous home invasion robberies begin to specifically target collectors and dealers, particularly those identified through registries and online forums.
(5) Documentation requirements stiffened, making taxation cost basis for coins without very specific sale documentation to be the face value of the coin.
(6) The IRS and state tax agencies crack down, lot by lot, on both buyers and sellers for the past several years of records at Heritage, Stacks/ANR, Superior, Teletrade, ...

A new product or holder?
A new form of AT detection?
Purchase of a major competitor?
etc.
I sure hope I am right.

Bear, you are correct. It is along these lines. Listen: David Hall would NOT make a "major" announcement involving dealers screwing collectors, and leave it at that.
Whatever the problem is, Hall will announce that PCGS has a solution. And the solution will absolutely, 100%, dead-for-sure be one that generates revenue for PCGS. That's why there's a big drum roll beforehand--to generate attention and interest on something that will channel money to PCGS. I'm not implying at all that there's something wrong with that. It's just good marketing and smart business, and if it helps collectors along the way, so much the better.
You're a wise old Bear.
