Here is another way to look at the population for reverse proof ASEs. To make the numbers simple, use 8 percent 70s, times a total of 250K possible and that would give you 20K in grade 70. There are 30K 1996-W coins out there that sell for more and are the key. I believe the prices will not go down for this coin in 70. I used an extreme number as there will probably be around 500 - 700 when the dust clears from all the submissions, not 20K but I wanted to give perspective compared with the series key.
Retired United States Mint guy, now working on an Everyman Type Set.
Interestingly, as First Strike MS-69s have shot up (recent prices above $300 each, from prices a couple weeks ago around $185), prices of First Strike Reverse Proof PR69s are starting to break down. Most prices had averaged around $305-$320 until a week or so ago. The last ten sold on ebay averaged $255.
I definitely would have returned the damaged R/P for an exchange. It's inexcusable that the Mint would have contractors that are clueless on how to carefully package a product. They also must know, by now, that these coins have been found in this condition, with the capsules floating around freely. Yours is the worst case scenario, with the coin actually out of the capsule.
It's even more ludicrous that they carelessly packaged these special anniversary sets that received so much publicity. I guess the Mint doesn't have any quality control inspectors that check on these fulfillment centers.
I received my ASE swet and noticed that the MS coin around the rim had some silver slivers off the rim. Its like it was not cut off all the way but was very minor. If you run your finger aound the rim you can feel the jagged silver sticking out of the rim. Is this common for this coin. Does not effect the coin in any form. Just a little extra silver to boot

"Of note, the guy in this link has to be quite happy with his ASE grades!!!!!!
30 coins and 6 PR70 grades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Of note is the fact that a LOT of PR70 coins are being graded by PCGS and NGC. Perhaps both of these TPGs are being more realistic with their 70 grades for recent modern coins.
Or, they are more liberal in their 70 grades to stimulate excitement and interest in the coins and their slabs.
In any event, the pop reports will be running high for 70s. While the percentage of 70s compared to 69s and below will still be relatively small, they will not have the value that older coins with 70 grades have.
In doing a search on eBay for 20th Anniversary ASEs, it appears that a PR68 is harder to come by than a 70.
According to the Mint's website, my SAE anniversary shipped 12/19/06 via Parcel Post.
When I go to the USPS website and enter the tracking # provided by the mint, it reads "we have no record of this item." Same thing if I use the link from the US Mint site.
I'll be calling the mint tomorrow to see if they can track it down...

Don't worry. This is how USPS tracking works.
The items does not exist even after it's been delivered to you.
Just wait for it and it should show up this week.
If it's lost, you'll have to wait for 30 days after shipment anyway before the mint can do anything.
I have 5 sets, 2 of them i opened the box because I heard things rattling around. At this point, should I just send the reverse proofs to get graded? Any point in spending so much in grading fees for the unc and the proof?
Any advice will be much appreciated!

Bright side, I ship 100's of package a year thru USPS for the last 8 years and have not loss one yet...
It may take some time but it will arrive...

Without the 20th Ann set label on the other two it's a break even proposition...
You can always do them later if need be...
Ordered mine 10/17, shipped 12/13, arrived 12/14 by Fedex...
Mine are moving around in the box also but I did not open them, so hoping for the best...

My tracking numbers did not show up on the USPS site either. After my order arrived, which took weeks, I learned that the Mint shipped my coins to the local post office via DHL. Despite the fact that I had the coins in hand, I checked the tracking number on the DHL site; my curiosity got the best of me. The USPS delivered the package the day after they received it.
I ordered late 11/12 recd 12/27.Coins are Pristine.I am not a grader, but I could not find a speck or flaw on any of them.Stupid me. I ordered only 1 set
1997 Matte Nickel strike thru U "Error Collector- I Love Dem Crazy Coins" "Money, what is money? It is loaned to a man; he comes into the world with nothing and he leaves with nothing." Billy Durant. Founder of General Motors. He died a pauper.
Today I got an email saying that the order that was listed as shipped, had been returned, and a credit would be applied to my account. I went to my account on the US Mint website, and the order showed as "one unit shipped 12/21, 1 units returned." The underneath that it reads "in stock and reserved".
So, I called the mint today and asked what was up.
Apparently, the order was shipped and returned to them, even though the address they have for me is correct- They did not get a reason as to why it was returned. They said that they will ship another set out for me soon.
So, I guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that the other one gets here.
Sigh...

Reverse Proof:
68: $ 2.09
69: $55.26
70: $1,544.82
MS:
68: $7.91
69 $119.39
DCAM:
68: $32.29 (one guy bid $158.05 for a 68)
69: $20.66
70 $461.52
Clearly, the 1st Strike lable commands signficant premiums on the higher graded coins. Though on lower grades it doesn't appear to matter much.
