True. They only differentiate *type*. For example, the vast majority of dimes and quarters minted today will circulate (even if they stay in change jars for months or years at a time). I don't think many commems or so-called "bullion" issues will circulate. For one thing, people are so used to their change not *changing* (except perhaps for the State Quarters) that they wouldn't know what to do with legal tender of an unfamiliar design.

Now days dimes and quarters might sit in change jars for years at a time but that wasn't true until very recently. A dime was a lot of money in 1973 and people didn't keep large numbers sitting around. The velocity of the coins was low by the standards of 1926 nickel but they rarely sat in one place for very long. Starting in 1972 the FED adopted FIFO accounting and began rotating their coin stocks; whichever coins had been in storage the longest were the first to be issued when more were needed. This combined with the nearly steady movement of these coins has affected virtually every single specimen. If you gather a bunch of the same date old clads you'll see that they are all worn nearly equally. They'll usually lie on a bell curve by condition but the high and low ends are close together.
Even today dimes and quarters probably spend less time not circulating than you might think. Look at the 1995 quarters. This was the last quarter to enter circulation normally because the states issue have interferred with normal distribution so later coins got into change over a longer period of time. 1995 quarters are usually seen in VF to a high grade XF with a few AU's. If there were large numbers of quarters sitting idle then there would be a lot more AU's.
It used to take about 18 years of circulation to totally eradicate all the AU's of a date. 2006 coins are likely to require more on the order of 25 years.

Jay, I am amazed that you are unable to get it. I removed my posts because you removed your inappropriate image in reply to Notlogical's post. That was my objective. Nothing more, nothing less. But the fact is your action was too late. The forum has now lost an outstanding YN. Notlogical is no longer allowed to post here because his parents feel the content posted by you is inappropriate for a 13 year old. The content is not for me to judge, but it is for his parents to judge. The fact that when his father asked you to be sensitive to the young boy was greeted with a "Crybaby" only solidified his decision. Your lame explanation that you didn't know he was a YN or that his father replied only shows how far you have your head up your azz. You must be the only member on this forum with over 1000 posts that did not know that. But I understand because you are so into yourself that the only posts you read are your own. Lucy had it right. All you needed to do was a simple apology. But your head is so buried you didn't do it. I posted directly to the thread instead of a PM because it was clear to me that the only way to get you to act correctly was through peer pressure. After all, you already laughed at the YN's father's request so I really doubt that my request by pm was going to be honored. And, your replies in our other PM's only confirms my belief.

Can't let your mouth stop, can you?
You jumped ON MY ASS from the get-go. I do NOT accept your assumption that EVERYONE knows who is and who is NOT a YN...and I resented your self-righteous decree of "decency". This isn't your kangaroo court. Had you been "decent" by pointing this out in a more polite manner maybe things would have played out differently. Buy you were the one who was immersed in self-adoration. As for the kid being kicked off the board, if that picture was that offensive to Cornhusker, then he better take the kid's computer away, because that was a damn cartoon...and there's far worse on TV, kid's magazines and kid's web-sites. Get off of your pulpit and stop preaching.
Do me a favor. Ignore my posts. We'll both be happier.
Hey Jay, this is a coin forum. Notlogical posted a very intelligent question to your thread and was met with an image of Spock and Kirk sharing a tub with your caption "Relax Spock". Why should coinhusker or any parent expect images like that to be posted on a coin forum?
You are barking up the wrong tree with your assertion that I am some kind of religious zealot. There are way too many around here that know me and must be finding that characterization hysterical. All I am doing is trying to protect the children. So let me ask politely: Jay, will you please keep your posts coin related?
I don't think there are many threads in which Saintguru and the YN both replied so it's not all that surprising that he missed this. The kid also is very well spoken and comes across as an adult so this further reduces the chances of people knowing.
We should all keep in mind that in this venue the only way we have to judge intent is by reading in between the lines and counting smileys. It is not wise to assume that the other person chose the best possible words to express his thoughts. Gen- erally just ramping it down if you think you should be offended will stop some of these things but, as has been suggested, pm's are an excellent tool to discover intent without derailing threads.
It would be difficult to blame anyone for how this thread has progressed but we prob- ably all had a hand in it.
Maybe the solution is to ban anything that even resembles a modern bashing thread.
<< <i> The forum has now lost an outstanding YN. Notlogical is no longer allowed to post here because his parents feel the content posted by you is inappropriate for a 13 year old. >>
If that's true, it seems like kind of a dramatic overreaction for a silly cartoon of Star Trek characcters in a bathtub. Still, certainly a parent's prerogative. But reading through the thread, I can't really say, "Oh you horrible man, we've lost an outstanding YN and it's ALL YOUR FAULT " or anything like that. I just can't get on that bandwagon. Maybe it's for the best anyway as the boards can be a bit raucous at times, and aren't really meant for sensitive young eyes. On a practical note for Notlogical, there's another coin forum called coincommunity.com, which is pretty active and bills itself as "the family coin forum" or something similar, which might be better for little kids.

You are barking up the wrong tree with your assertion that I am some kind of religious zealot. There are way too many around here that know me and must be finding that characterization hysterical. things but, as has been suggested, pm's are an excellent tool to discover intent without
derailing threads.
It would be difficult to blame anyone for how this thread has progressed but we prob-
ably all had a hand in it.
Maybe the solution is to ban anything that even resembles a modern bashing thread.

If that's true, it seems like kind of a dramatic overreaction for a silly cartoon of Star Trek characcters in a bathtub. Still, certainly a parent's prerogative. But reading through the thread, I can't really say, "Oh you horrible man, we've lost an outstanding YN and it's ALL YOUR FAULT
